SPORTORAMA
By DON BARTON
GAMECOCK HALL OF FAME
The University of South Carolina has produced many
truly great athletes, covering all fields of sports. These ath
letes would probably compare favorably with those of any
school in the United States, but they do not, in most cases,
receive the recognition that players of larger schools receive.
Usually, players who stand out on Carolina teams make
all-state with ease, and are often placed on all-Southern
Conference teams. In two cases Gamecocks have been placed
on Associated Press All-America second teams. These honors
are recorded and filed somewhere, seldom to be seen or
thought of again.
In order that deserving athletes will receive a lasting place
in -the Carolina sporting world, Sportorama would like to
advocate the establishment of a HALL OF FAME for ath
letes of USC.
A suggested plan, similar to that used by several colleges,
would be to set up a board to select persons to be placed in
the hall. Only one athlete could be chosen for any one year,
except upon unanimous approval of the board to select more a
than one. This selection board could, when it sees fit, name b:
athletes of former years to be placed along with those that -
are chosen in future years.
The board of selection might be composed of the athletic
director of the school, head coach of the football team, sec
retary of the alumni association, president of the student
body, president of ODK honorary fraternity, director of ath
letic publicity at the University and the sports editor of h,
THE GAMECOCK for the semester in which the choice is ti
made. Persons in other significant positions could be added
to this board. N
WHERE THE PUBLIC CAN SEE
This preposed hall of fame would be recognized at a con
spicuous place on the campus. Maybe in future years space ti
will allow establishment of a trophy room, a section of which a
could be set aside for the hall of fame. f<
Along with a plaque with the names of its members, a
picture of each member and a short history of his athletic
achievements at the University would be displayed. Such f<
a place would be well-kept and not allowed to be consumed PI
by dust and cob webs. fi
tr
Probably the most eligible organization on the campus
to handle such a project would be the Block C club. That f<
club can appreciate what it takes to become a truly out- 1f
standing athlete and would probably be more conscientious p
in seeing that the hall of fame is maintained as it should
be than any other organization at the school.
We are willing to do anything we can to see that such a
project becomes a reality at Carolina. It is well worth think
ing over-it is worth doing something about.
MAYBE THIS WILL HELP s1
A booking office for Southern Conference basketball of- f
ficials has been approved by the conference cage committee G
of which Eddie Cameron of Duke is chairman. st
The purpose of the booking office is to improve the stand-1
ard of officiating in the conference and at the same time h
to keep a supply of officials on hand at all times. Di
After digesting some of the officiating that was displayed ti
on the floor of the Carolina field house last season, we hopeI
that this new arrangement will help add to the games by
enabling us to obtain first-class referees.

Neil Allen, Freddie Bargiacchi, and Bishop Strickland were 1

from the Jayvee-Fort Jackson game Saturday night are not

in last week's issue, supposedly of Ernie Lawhorn, that was 1
