Fifth Quarter by KEN BALDWIN The Booster Club was organized to promote school spirit in general and particularly so in regards to support of our football team. It has met with considerable success in some of its undertakings: and failures in others., While the suc cesses speak for t4iemselves, recent failures do not and simply because we students have not jumped on the band wagon and helped. We speak primarily of the club's attempt last Saturday to have students perform "card tricks" for the benefit of visitors from Furman and others. What happened is history, but certain disorganized efforts bear scrutinization. After students were comfortably (?) seated in the aisles, Booster Clubers made the grave mistake of attempting to wade through and pass out big red cards to students in one section. Instead of the right people getting them, the cards were passed along to the far corners of the student section. Later, an effort was made to have them passed back. They were! That is, of course, all except most of them which had been either torn up into little pieces or made into gigantic paper airplanes that knocked hell out of some other Joe College or his drag. The whole affair must have presented a ridiculous spec tacle to the opposite stands. They probably thought we were a bunch of disorganized morons. Why can't a group of mature college students present a colorful series of "card tricks"? It has been done before here at Carolina and there is no reason why it can't be done again, unless everyone continues to have a spirit of non cooperation. As well as we remember, back in '41 and '42, these cards were thumb-tacked to the stadium seats with accompanying instructions on how to do what and when. On a signal from the head cheerleader the cards were flashed and the result ing effect was greeted by enthusiastic applause from all onlookers. Things like this go a long way in developing and maintaining the "rah, rah spirit" that helps spur the home team on. And "rah, rah spirit" does pay off, too. It has lifted a lot of teams from the brink of defeat to the goal line of victory. Although we don't belong to the Booster Club we are a Game cock Booster and would like to add (this is no plug) that the current issue of SPORTFOLIO has many examples of "rah, rah spirit" in a similarly titled article. These examples, in use by other schools in the nation, could work here, but none of them will ever work unless everyone helps. Let US either put it across right or give up the whole thing and put our time and efforts to other endeavors. LOOK GOOD, SOUND GOOD While we're on the band-wagon, the band has been the recipient of many bouquets lately and it is due in no small part to the colorful new uniforms they are displaying so proudly this season. Not only does it look good but it sounds PLENTY GOOD!!! For our money it's the best in the state and right up at the top with other bands in the conference. No longer do the fans dig down in their pockets expecting to make a contribution to the Salvation Army, when our band comes on the field. Thanks to you, Don Barton, and others who brought the heretofore sad plight into the spotlight and to the officials who did something about it. Orchids also to Prof. Louis Fink of the Music Department and to phys. ed instructor Arthur Fourier wvho has been help ing with the drilling. TRIMMINGS FROM THE BIRD'S CLAWS We are happy to see that Carolina will have a cross-coun try team this fall and wish the Harriers the best of luck. This sport is one of many so-called "minor sports" that give the unsung a chance for recognition and a block letter. We stand firmly in favor of all inter-collegiate sports, minor included, and hope the university will see fit to have teams participating in all of them . . . Al Faress, Neil Allen, Len Ekimoff, Jake Land, Bobby O'Harra, Red Wilson, and ' all the lineman deserve a big hand for the terrific job of plugging up for Furman and opening up for the Birds . ..
