Lawhorne went through guard on the next play for the fourth score. Land again made the conversion. The whole Carolina line charged well. Al Faress and Phil Alex ander responded to starting as signments by turning in fine de fensive performances, and when Phil's brother, Kale, came in be side him at his right tackle spot, the Purples h'esitated to run a play toward that side of the line. The play of Bill Estee, freshman from Rock. Hill, was worthy of note, especially in the way he rushed Furman passers. Len Ekimoff continued .to han dle the job 'of filling the center spot, vacated by All-American Bryant Meeks. Ekimoff covered pass receivers well and backed up the line with heads-up football. Red Harrison played his usual bang-up defensive role and scored a touchdown that was called back on a holding penalty. Strick land has an overall average of 6.9 yards per try. Freddie Barglacchi, also a freshman, is second with 110 yards in 15 attempts, for an average of 7.3 yards. Jack Couch has av eraged 4.8 yards on 19 rushes for. a total of 92 yards and Red Har rison has gained 67 yards on 14 tries, averaging 4.8 yards to rank third and fourth. James (Droopy) Atwell leads the Gamecocks in passing, having completed 13 of 22 passes for 173 yards. Atwell hit the mark on three of four attempts Saturday for 34 yards, two of the passes go ing for touchdowns, both times to Red Wilson. Wilson leads Caro lina pass receivers, having gath ered in four for 85 yards. The team's total rushing yard age for the first four games is 778 on 174 running plays for an average of 4.4 yards per play and 194.5 yards per game. Against Furman, the Gamecocks gained 271 yards rushing, and 85 passing, for a total of 356 yards. The Birds played their best de fensive game of the year against the Purples, holding them to 20 yards on the ground and 34 passing. The weak spot in Carolina sta tistics was the punting. USC averaged 29 yards kicking Satur day, but that included two blocked punts. ball-handling, signal calling and defensive play. C. Bill Rutledge Out For Year 'With Bad Leg Carolina suffered its second football casualty of the season Saturday afternoon when hard .hitting Bill Rutledge suffered torn ligaments in his right knee. The big fullback will be lost for the rest of the season, according to _Dr. H. G. Waddell, - university physician. Bill had been serving as a re placement for Red Harrison and his services will be sorely missed, especially with the Clemson game coming up. This is done at other schools, and that includes vet erans. The boys who play the games for us work hard preparing for the games, but what do we do? Would it hurt the students or local alumni to meet once a week for pep rallies? Carolina does have a good team and can have a greater team if the students and alumni of the school give them the backing they deserve. Randy Crawford.
