The driving power that has placed Bishop Strickland at the
of Carolina ground gainers is evident in this smash through the Ma
land line. Ed Schwartz (37) is the potential tackler and Al Phill
(42) is behind the runner.
Although he is five feet, nine inches tall and weighs 190 pouf
Strickland is one of the fastest men on the squad. (Photo by S

'TAIN'T ALL THAT BAD
Can you remember a warm October afternoon not quit(
year ago-an afternoon on which the Carolina Gamecoc
won a smashing 26 to 14 victory over Clemson? Think bE
a bit further to a close 6 to 14 loss to the Alabama Rc
Bowl champions.
How many of you would not have voted for Rex Enrig
for governor of South Carolina after either of those game
Yes, the students and alumni were really in good spirits afi
Clemson and Alabama had come here. They would talk abc
those games among themselves-they would go home a
tell the folks, friends and anyone who would listen all abt
how THEIR Gamecocks almost upset Alabama and how th
trounced their old rival, the Bengal from Clemson.
Then tragedy struck!!
We were no match for Duke or Wake Forest-at least wh
was left of a previous good Carolina squad was no mat
for those conference powers. Injuries had eliminated wh
chance the Birds had of beating either of those teams.
Then, old Jane Garnet and Mr. Black lost that "rah, ral
attitude and started griping about everything from Coa
Enright's tactics to the way the water boy shuffled when
went onto the field. Finally, the Christmas spirit quiet
the skeptics.
Then came 1947 and a new edition of the Gamecocks. 'I
first game went as usual, with Enright using every r
on the squad and very few of the plays on the books. Ma:
land brought a darn good team down and beat Carolina
one touchdown, but the Gamecocks still showed some pov
offensively and defensively, after a bad first quarter.
Then tragedy struck (Part II)!!
Everything went wrong at Memphis-from the weatl
and the Bird offense to the blonde that the Carolina pi
licity man almost got a date with. That happened agains
foe that was already superior, so the result was a 33 to 0 1
and more criticism for Enright. The alarmists wanted
know what's wrong.
Well, frankly, Sportorama's money is on Rex Enrig
We believe that nothing 'is wrong that won't be correct
and that the 1947 Gamecocks will come into their own. (
game doesn't make or break a football team. Beating 14
sissippi wouldn't have sent us to the Sugar Bowl, and los
to the Rebs isn't going to put the University of South CE
lina on the black list of American colleges.
We suggest that everyone get behind the Gamecocks
Coach Enright and his staff, and bear with them after los
just as we dance a jig after victories. Carolina faces, to:
it bluntly, a helluva schedule for the rest of the year. ']
state teams are gunning day andl night for us and the
of state teams are Miami, Duke and Wake Forest, wli
spells trouble.
We won't win 'em all from here out, we may not win h
but all six of those remaining teams will know they've b
in a game.
Sportorama casts its vote of confidence for Rex Enris
who knows football and can produce winning teams.
FURMAN IS HOT FOR THIS ONE
Two Mondays ago the Gamecocks trotted out onto Ds
field to get down to work for the Mississippi game. Furn
University's football squad went out to practice the sa
day, but they were going to concentrate on the UniverE
of South Carolina. The following Saturday, while the Bi
were battling Mississippi and the mud, the Hurricane coa
ed and players were ending a week of supercharging for U
That seven-day head start that Furman had over CE
lina gives the Hurricane a great advantage in tomorro
game. Coach Enright has had barely four days to cori
mistakes of last Saturday, look over Furman plays
effect a defense, plus sharpening his own offense. The
a big order against a keen rival.
We predict that the Gamecocks will come~ out on top
morrow, but not without a battle. The Purples are gunn
for us; they want to spoil the Carolina Homecoming, a
what's more they're in a darn good position to do it.
Tomorrow should afford an interesting afternoon of f<
ball, but we suggest that, if you are a nail-biter, don't for
your gloves !
