"Red" a fine job as publicity di reitor at The Citadel last year aqd this corner is jubilant over his eturn "home" as it was here that college days began. At the Newberry game we had ^tlj privilege of sitting in the ,ss box and noting first hand ;ine of the fine work the ole "red-head" is doing. He. had on ?hind for distribution to the writ .e and radio men, a book of ad :tneed material and facts on the '47 Gamecocks compiled by "Red" and the department of athletics. SAlso on hand were a quantity of football programs plus sand *iehes, cokes, and beer all doled out by "Red," who not only acted as host but chief bartender as well. A small PA system handled by our able colleague, Don Barton, aided the writers who were un familiar with the Gamecocks and their opponents. All of this adds up to another step in making this a "greater Carolina." We know you'll keep up the good work, "Red," and again, WELCOME BACK! We had hoped that Carolina would have a cross-country team in action this fall, but after talk ing to one of last year's members the situation looks dark. We don't want to stick the old neck out too far, without talking to more re sponsible persons first, but we do think it a shame that Carolina can't be represented along with other schools in the conference and that those interested students, 12 so far, some of whom might not be good enough to participate in other sports, should be deprived of the opportunity to win a block letter. Prob ably not. But there are few who do not recognise the victory song of the Fighting Irish. Could you whistle the alma md ters of the University of Wiscon sin, West Point, Georgia Tech, Southern California or Illinois? We doubt it, but there are fa miliar fight songs that symbolize those schools to everyone who fol lows football even casually. Now the brainbuster? Stop a moment and think of the fight song for the University of South Carolina? Does it come into your mind very easily-Ir at all? Maybe we have one; maybe we don't. Who knows? There have been several attempts to get. a good song for Carolina, and sev eral have been written, but they seem to vanish into thin air-or perhaps they're kept in a music library somewhere on the campus for posterity to look at. Bargiacchi scored the first time he handled the ball, on a 26-yard spurt through the center of the line, in the first of several nice runs turned in during the day. Strickland showed power and speed that should establish him as one of the South's most dan gerous runners before his days at Carolina are over. Coach Enright fielded a squad deep in reserves, both in the back field and the line, including sev eral outstanding first-year per formers.
