SPOR'I By DO] ON THE OTHER HAND Several issues back we did n< hesitate to print a letter and es press the views of persons wh disapproved of the way our base ball team was handled this yeai Well, there are people on the can pus with opposite opinions. W have talked to several who dih agree with what was said in the discussion, so, with the realize tion that there are two sides t every question, we shall endeavc to look at things from a differer angle and see if our previous di: cussion was flawless. Here's the situation: Approx mately 80 candidates answered ti first call for baseball playeri Coach Smith faced the problei of shaping a team for the openin game, which was about two wee! away. The weather was terribl, so workouts were confined to ti fieldhouse, certainly no ideal sp( for baseball practice. Several < the boys out for the team ha played baseball at Carolina befor< but the majority were strangei to the coach and he had the jc of deciding, in a short time, b seeing them perform briefly, undh far from perfect conditions, whi boys were good enough for tt team and which ones weren't. Well, the team finally went ou side, and opening day drew neare The team had to be reduced. Bo3 who were plainly not college basi ball material were dropped, a1 the task of picking from those wi1 were more promising followe< Some of those who were eliminate believed that they are good enoug for the team and that they wei given a raw deal. Naturally, the thought they were good enoug for the team or they wouldn have gone out. Maybe the rigl ones were kept for the team maybe some were dropped thi should have been playing. Now, just why should a coac drop a player that is obvious better than others out for his p sition. A coach is hired to win be games, and if he picks the be players, his chances of winnir are much better. Very few coach go out of their way to "play f vorites" when it hurts the chances of winning-victories a a coach's meal tickets. One coa< having to pick nine men from i cannot be expected to be infallib -pencils are still being made wi erasers on them. As we went to press Carolina baseball team had won five o of six games. The student bo< has had a chance to look at tl team a good bit lately and s the various players perform. any student could teplace any these players with someone th he KNOWS could do a better jc he has a legitimate complai about the selection of the tea1 Otherwise, he has none. We have tried to look at tI question from both sides. We ci see the point of view of those wl believed our team to be lackii the services of some good ba players; that is entirely possib and there is no doubt fine n terial "going to waste" at Car lina. We can also appreciate difficult task of trying to pick baseball team without hurtii someone's feelings-there ji aren't enough positions on a has ball team to avoid it!! They will travel to Clemson to engage the Tigers in a two game series next Friday and Sat urday to end their 1947 season. To date the Gamecocks have an over-all won and lost record of eight wins against 14 losses, a state record of seven wins against eight losses and a conference rec ord of five wins against six losses. This record is not too encouraging, but for a team that started its season off, after one win, with eight straight losses from March 28 to April 15, it is not bad. The Birds' five game winning streak was cut short Wednesday when the Wofford Terriers, play ing for blood, gained a 6 to 3 decision. Three of these six Wof ford runs were unearned and came in the eighth inning as a result of three Carolina errors. Up until that point the ball club was match ing Wofford run for run and ap peared to be holding its own. Cy Szakasci, who relieved Bo Hagan in the seventh inning, was credited with the loss. Harry Parone, leading hitter in the Wofford game, continued to set his fast pace and is now slugging a hefty .415 to pave the way for the other Carolina hitters. which end of the caddy to take hold of? Hacky Walker defeated Zeglar D become top man in Section I, at Walker downed Dick Fagan nd Gene Spears to win in Section I, while Woolbright was declared rinner in his section, having won he only match played. In doubles competition, Zeglar 'ark defeated Gourdin-Hooks and Valker-Walker won over Mac +illan-Hollings, both twosomes dvancing to the semi-finals.
