SPORTORAMA
By DON BARTON
WELCOME OME
Our baseball team hasn't appeared on the local diamon
in apptoximately a month, the latest home game being wit:
Clemson. Since that time most Carolina students have prol
ably forgotten that we have a baseball team, in spite of Jo
Molony's able coverage and pertinent comments on thi
page.
Well, the prodigal sons return to Davis Field Monda
against Newberry, a team that downed them 7-2 previously
Two weeks ago we mentioned the baseball team in this co
umn, saying that we expected them to snap out of the lo
hng streak that night. They won 23-4! With the hope thu
we can turn the trick again (and the knowledge that New
berry is much better than the Bulldogs) we predict tha
the Gamecocks will give the home crowd something to smil
about Monday afternoon. And we don't pretend to be cryst
gazers, either-just optimists!!
WHICH WAY DID HE GO? ,
Scooter Rucks has beep showing his heels to all comei
(except Duke) in the 440 and 220-yard dashes this yea
Against Newberry we expected the same thing, so we el
gaged a cameraman to be at the finish line of the 440-yar
event Wednesday to snap Scooter's picture as he broke th
tape.
The race started and Rucks quickly established a con
manding lead, so we looked away with the satisfaction the
he would be in the picture all by himself. Looking back u
at the finish line we were astonished to see that Rucks didn
break the line. In fact, he was nowhere to be seen. What ha
happened? Had he been unable to make a turn at such
high rate of speed and crashed into Melton Field? Had I
done as the hare had done in lying down to wait for the to:
tolse? Regardless, there was no Rucks, no picture, no nuthil
for us except an unsolved mystery.
Later we found out that Coach DuPre had called him froi
the track. We also learned that the cameraman wasn't ther
anyhow!
We might try again this afternoon, so, please, coac)
let Scooter finish!
WAIT AND SEE
Next weekend is the pay-off date for college track tean
in South Carolina, as the state meet is held at Clinton at the
time, with Presbyterian College as host.
If our memory is correct, the Tigers are defendin
champions, but sportswriters throughout the state do n(
seem to have the opinion that they will be successful in di
fending that title. The basis of this belief is the seven-poir
defeat that Clemson handed the Birds last week, five c
these points being handed to the Tigers when Scooter Ruci
was disqualified on a technicality, after coming in first i
the 440-yard dash.
Well, we'll bet our month's salary for writing this colun1
that our Gamecocks will take anything that Clemson or ar
other school has to offer in the state meet. If they don't, ju
forget the whole thing, but if they do, remember, we to
you so!
OFF THE SUBJECT
A woman and her small boy were out window-shoppir

Carolina's diamond hopefuls will
entertain Newberry College, one
of nine colleges which has hum
. bled the Birds, Monday afternoon
S at Melton Field beginning at 3:30
p- m.
The Gamecocks were entertained
by a formidable Duke Blue Devil
nine at Durham, N. C., Thursday
and Friday after suffering their
- eleventh defeat at the hands of
t P. C., the first part of the week.
No'report came in concerning the
USC-Georgia game of Wednesday,
but it is believed to have been
rained out at. Thomson, Ga.
l The loss of Jack Couch for sev
eral days when he strained a Pi
muscle in the Furman game was Foi
felt greatly by Coach Smith and tak
could have been a deciding factor of
in the Birds loss to P. C. However,
r'.
it must be pointed out that Couch V
was in the lineup wlen Carolina
d wqs on the short end of their
e previous ten ball games.
Carolina's pitching is still its ule
weakest department, something tea
that shouldn't be so-not with coi
some 4,000 students in school and the
about 2,000 of this number vet- pla
erans. to
d top
d Catfish Smith's charges have
a been hitting the ball hard and of- gal
e ten, but can't seem to gather in lo
the runs. While the opposing at
teams are making each hit count,
it is no oddity to read in the box vs.
score: left on base-Carolina 10 Pri
or 12 men. This just doesn't make
e for winning baseball. gy
At times the team's baserun
ning could compare favorably
with any high school nine's, but vs
usually it suffered even by this gyi
comparison. The boys seemed to
fall asleep on the base paths, pi
s when they should have been on All
t their toes. This fault was vividly
portrayed during the first of the Te
g season and Coach Smith has cor- Ph
rected it somewhat during the last 1
few games. -
After the first 14 college base- ph
k ball games Carolina could boast vs.
of only one man who has gone
the entire route, Cy Szakasci, and pi
s he's lasted the full nine innings
v.
n twice. In the other contests the
pitchers have been left in the box
until they were shelled off by the Pr<
n enemy for the sole reason that Ph
Coach Smith had no onie to go to
their rescue.
a Our baseball team is a sad situ- R(
d ation, indeed, for it is unbelievable
that a school of Carolina's enroll- me
ment couldn't find three or four
men on the campus capable of gr
pitching winning College baseball. N
g It only leads one to believe that
Ssomething is drastically wrong an
somewhere. Someone made a time
ly observation during the New- O
I berry-Carolina track meet that ob
s. the track team draws more spec- 0ou
tators than our major sport--base- in
ball. This is a bitter pill to swal- we
low--but it's the awful truth.
