YOUR CHOICE
Congratulations to Bryant Meeks on being -voted Carc
lina's outstanding athlete. We are glad that the student bod
had the opportunity to express their appreciation for- th
service that Junior has done the university in various atl
letic events. May this be just one more stepping stone t
even greater achievement.
We also would like to congratulate Earl Dunham on plac
ing second in the poll. Earl certainly displayed all the quali
ties outlined on the ballot, as did Meeks, and deseryes a grea
deal of credit for his truly great work in football, basketbal
and baseball at Carolina. All of us will miss "Sherif f's" grea
field generalship on the USC gridiron next fall, along wit]
his fine offensive and defensive work.
Carolina is fortunate in having two such athletes on th
campus at the same time. She is unfortunate in not beini
able to present more than one trophy.
We point with pride to these two Macon boys; to Junio
with anticipation of a great year to come-to Earl wit]
fond memories of one who has been A credit to the Univer
sity of South Carolina. You'll have to go a long way to replac
either of them.
ATTENDANCE 1,000!
Wednesday afternoon we had as our guests the Presby
terian College tennis team. For this match, as for all others
Carolina students filled the bleachers and were standing a]
around the courts. This is encouraging for the future o
tennis here.
Well, Coach Murray of P. C. had with him a form tha
he uses to keep a record of tennis matches. On that fort
was a place to record the attendance figures, and the Blu
Stockings coach had filled in "1.000" as the attendance a
that match.
Personally, we couldn't estimate more than about 400 a
the turnout, so we have concluded that Carolina supporter,
gave out with so much spirit and chatter at the matche
that it made it seem that there were twice as many there
We wish there had been!
LOOKING AHEAD
Coach Enright plans to meet with representatives fron
major organizations on the campus in the near future t4
settle the student seating situation for next fall's home foot
ball games. The purpose is to find what section of the sta
dium will be best for accommodating the student body an(
what portion of it will be required. Another problem is i
find out how much space is necessary to seat one studeni
so the amount of space to hold around 5,000 can be deter
mined.
This thing of date tickets might be handled in a differen
manner from last year's systemt. We understand that Caro
lina is one of the few schools in the South that allows outsid
"dates" to sit in the student section. The usual procedur
is to honor the student athletic card in another section an
let him buy a general admission ticket for his guest.
Much of this will be ironed out when Enright gets te
gether with the representative students. We think this i
an excellent idea on the part of our director of athletics, a
it will prevent difficulty next fall and allow everyone to coir
centrate on our football team instead of the mob at the gater

Netters Meet
Citadel Today;
Down Furman
Coach Hank Bartos will send
his up-and-down racquet team
against the Citadel Bulldogs in
Charleston this afternoon. This
will be the fifth match of the
week for the Carolina netters, and
their fourth on consecutive days.
The feature match of the week
was played Wednesday on the
local courts before the largest
turnout of the season. Presby
terian furnished the opposition on
this occasion. The best Carolina's
players could do was make every
match close, four of them going
into the third set, but the Blue
Stockings were able to tighten up
and win the decisive sets in all
cases and the visitors came out on
the long end of a 7-0 score.
Turner, McLaurin, and McKin
ney were able to win sets in the
single matches, but weakened in
the third. Todd dropped his singles
match to Wilkinson, 6-4, 6-3. A. J.
Smith returned to action after a
siege of malaria and took the lead
in both his sets but was overtaken
on both occasions and fell to
Krouse, 8-6, 7-5.
The locals came back strong
Thursday to win handily from
Furman, 7-2. McLaurin and Todd,
with their usual steady brand of
tennis were able to take their op
ponents in straight sets, while
Turner and Mchinney were forced
into a third, but won on both oc
casions.
Smith and Barton continued to
find the going rough, dropping
their singles matches for USC's
only losses.
The doubles teams of McLaurin
McKinney, Turner-Todd, and
Smith-Barton swept the final
matches easily.

Drop Close Game
To Ga. at Thomson;
Hitters Come Thru
After dropping a 12-11 heart
breaker to the Georgia Bulldogs
ruesday, the university baseball
squad finds itself in trreenville
this weekend for Friday and Sat
urday games.
The Thomson, Georgia affair
went fine for the Gamecocks until
the sixth inning. Until then thef
were on the happy end of a 10-3
score and seemed to be breezing
in for their second straight win.
Then everything backfired for
Coach Smith's men. The pitchers
lost the plate and couldn't find
it for the remainder of the game.
Although the Georgians could get
no more than seven hits during
the game, the Carolina fingers is
sued enough free passes to en
able them to amass the necessary
number of runs to come out on
top.
The locals meet Presbyterian
College in Kingstree Tuesday.

The girls softball club will meet
twice next week, it was announced
yesterday. The first meeting will
be held at 3 p. m., Wednesday and
the second on Thursday at 4 p. m.
