The Carolina tennis team will
meet the Presbyterian College net
ters today at 1:30 on the campus
courts. This will be the first meet
ing between the two schools this
year.
The Blue Stockings, coached
by Murray, former professional
at Forest Hills, N. Y., will afford
some of the best tennis talent met
by the locals this year.
College of Charleston and David
son spoiled the two opening home
encounters for the Gamecock net
men by defeating them 4-3, and
6-1, respectively.
The College of Charleston set
back came somewhat of a sur
prise.
Davidson, boasting the third
ranking juniors player in the
South, came to Columbia Monday.
They arrived late but made up for
lost time by sending Roddy out to
meet Turner in a match that end
ed in the Wildcat star winning
6-2, 6-2.
Gordon McLaurin got off to a
good start against Buck Archer
in the No. 2 singles match but
weakened in the second and third
sets to lost 6-8, 6-3, 6-1.
Wilton McKinney dropped his
first match in his last four stars
by bowing to Ted Keesler, 6-3, 6-1.
Glenn Turpin downed Harris Todd
of the Birds in the No. 4 singles
in straight sets, 6-4, 7-5. Todd had
previously won three consecutive
victories.

Routs Citadel
in Wild Game

Carolina's baseball team finally
broke into the win column. after
nine consecutive losses, with an
impressive 23-4 victory over The
Citadel Bulldogs. The Birds now
have a season's record of two wins
Against eight losses.
The Gamecocks jumped all over
four Dusty Rhodes' coached pitch
ars for nineteen hits, while Cita
iel was committing 12 miscues
afield. Leading hitter for Caro
lina was Jack Couch, the team's
pace setter in the hitting depart
ment, who gathered in five hits
for six times up, including a
double and triple.
Coach Catfish Smith used two
newcomers in The Citadel con
test, Melvin Cri>b and Joe John
ston at third base and right field
respectively, and the boys came
through in fine style. Their hit
ting in the Newberry game war
ranted this starting role.
Johnston was hurt in the first
inning, when, in a run down be
tween home and thi!rd base, he
tripped over the bag on third and
sprained his ankle and had to be
removed from the game. It is un
likely that Joe will see action for
another week or two but when
he returns to the lineup his big
bat will be greatly welcomed by
Coach Smith. It was Joe's single
in the first inning that started
the fireworks off for the Game
ocks down in Charleston.
Cy Szakasci turned in a brilliant
pitching job on the mound against
Citadel limiting the Bulldogs to
nine scattered hits. Cy was a little
wild on occasions and eight walks
were chalked up against him.
Dope From the Dugout
Mel Cribb was one of the hottest
pitchers down in Hemingway last
year a source reported . "Scotty"
Scott is a switch-hitter, he had
batted left-handed up until the
Citadel game when he switched
to the starboard side. It showed
quite an improvement in his hit
ting, too, since he gathered in two
hits for six bats while he hadn't
made this many hits all season
long . . . It is undlerstoodl that the
Citadel Bulldogs were dlefeated a
couple of weeks ago in a practice
game by the Charleston High
game 4 to 0. . . . No reflections
on the Gamecock's play though,
the team was primed for this wvin
and, although a little shaky at
times, displayed the brand of ball
they're capable of playing andl

Intramural Softball
Gets Started On
Davis Field
Play in the intramural softball
league began last week with 20
teams participating. The games
are played each afternoon on Da
vis field, barring conflicts with
varsity sports.
Joe Grugan, intramural chief,
has requested that teams having
games on Saturdays at 2 p. m.,
send one representative to his of
fice for equipment before noon.
Teams having games at 6 p. Tn.,
any day, should send a representa
tive to his office for equipment
before 5 p. m.
Printed below is the schedule,
subject to change, for games
through May 3. It is suggested
that each team keep a copy posted
where their players can see it and
be at the proper field at time
designated. Field No. 1 is the one
closest the gym, and Field No. 2
is closest Melton Field.

four slot. In the second inning he
proceeded to belt a 320 foot triple
into right center field and, after
tiring in the box in the second
frame, was promptly removed
from the game-triple or no triple.
The Citadel undoubtedly could
have used his big bat . . . Jack
Couch is leading the Gamecocks
in RBI with 17-Hits with 16
and in batting with an average
of .421--Quite a bit of hitting,
agreed ? . . . The umpiring down in
Charleston wasn't had at all, but
this corner will stick to the re
liable combine of .Joe Patrone and
"K.K." Ouzts.
Wilton "Skinny" McKinney is the
No. 3 singles player on the Caro
lina tennis team this year. A senior
from Greenville, McKinney will be
seen in action on the local courts
this afternoon as the Bird court
