SPORTORAMA By DON BARTON PRETTY BOY IS CHOSEN A last minute deluge of votes that had tabulators groggy boosted Fred Lytle into top position in the race for the title of "Glamour Boy" of the Carolina basketball team, as the polls closed Wednesday. Just when it seemed that "Debonair Don" Cade had the title in the bag, the "Lytle Fan Club" went to work and generated enough ballots to snatch the honor from the pride of the Block "C" Club. Lytle had 249 votes to Cade's 196. Nick Esterhay, the peoples' choice, ran a close third with 190 supporters, or rather, votes. Esterhay ballot stuffers failed to come through in the clutch, and the boy with the "million dollar legs" fell victim to a startling upset. Judges ignored a bitter protest from Cade supporters, who contended that they personally filled out 250 ballots for their claim to masculine charm, and the issue was settled without bloodshed. Several cases of writer's cramp were re ported from the infirmary, however. 1 Bill Williams, handicapped by a concealed knee, ran far behind in fourth place, with 37 votes, several of them be ing legitimate. Cantore was fifth, with 15 votes, thirteen in feminine handwriting. Bobby Giles amassed 10 ballots, four in pencil, three in ink, one in red pencil and one in in visible ink. Adams and Proctor were all knotted up in the seventh spot, gaining 7 votes each. Incidentally, all of Proctor's were in the same handwriting. Others receiving votes were: Ekimoff, 6; Snoddy, 3; Ad-1 miral Smith, 3; Don Barton, 3; Martin, 2; Szakasci, 2; Bob Isbell, 2; Charles Wickenberg, 1; Sol Blatt, 1; Gneissen, 1; Richard III, 1; Cribb, 1; Kilroy, 1; and Professor Christo phersen, 1. ALL FOULED UP Several days ago a letter was received by your columnist from Eddie Shapiro, sports editor of the George Washington University "Hatchet." Inclosed was an editorial which ap peared in the February 11 issue of that paper. The subject of Mr. Shapiro's article was the poor basket ball officiating that is found throughout the Southern Con ference. So, you see Carolina isn't the only school that has had its games marred by faulty refereein'. Briefly summarizing Eddie's complaints, he says, "Too many times this season have teams suffered at the hands of referees who were too old, too fat, and too lazy to keep up with the youngsters on the court, and thus were in no position to make a decision on a particular play." (Not un heard of in the U. S. C. field house!) "Secondly, the unstable methods of officiating throughout the country are proving most unhealthy to the sport." (Each section of the country has its own peculiarities in calling fouls. From what we hear, in the East they'll practically call you down for staring, while on the West Coast you have to almost draw blood to have a foul called.) "Last, I implore the Conference to set a limit on the num ber of games any official may work for a given school in one year." Eddie explains that when a referee sticks around a school so long that he seems like part of the faculty, it is time for a change. He says, "So, the practical referee doesn't 'bite the hand which feeds him,' and the school which em ploys him suffers no wrong. But the poor visitor-." There are many who will agree with Eddie, and there are others who will disagree. However, this is something for the student body to think about, and something for the ones who select officials to do something about! Al Adams In Infirmary While Frank Johnson and asso cites were in Newberry last Wed-. nesday night, Big Al Adams was confined to his bed in the Univer sity infirmary with a foot infec tion.
