Ann Mood, Betty Mood Answer Unknown The House Ways and Means Committee this week announced a tentatively drafted c bill which would pool all previously ear- B marked departmental revenues into an an- al ticipated overall state income of over $88,- cl 000,000 for the fiscal year beginning July 1. a In listing the amounts that would be pro- b vided for the various offices, departments, H and institutions under the tentative meas- M ure, the committee listed the University as lo receiving $2,193,520. This sum, which cor- th responds to the amount submitted by the w Budget Commission for total operating ex penses for the University, includes $1,722,- in 800 estimated revenue for the University m other than state appropriations. Simple fa arithmetic subtraction shows that $470,720 se: must be appropriated by the state to even make ends meet for maintaining and operat ing the school. The Budget Commission recommended only $420,720. President Smith asked for $710,218 which would provide for the construction and at maintenance of the four temporary build- isl ings which have been secured for the Uni- ar versity, a supplement to teachers' salaries, ou and several other needed improvements. Subtract again and the figures show that ba $289,498 is lacking for essential needs of the et University. Where is that money coming from? We don't know. Only the gentlemen TI of the legislature can answer that question. S. 21 book for le?' or "I can't buy my Sociology book the book store. Where am I gonna get e?" In some cases, class enrollments have far :ceeded expected numbers and the supply books used in those classes has been in [equate. In other cases, the book store has en unable to purchase books because of rikes in the publishing conipanies or be use of the limited number of books avail ile due to the shortage of paper. There are, however, many of these needed >oks lying unused right here on the cam is. The Gamecock urges each student to llect any books he has used previously and nnot use again and sell them to the book ore. The X-rays are being conducted in sociation with the Richland County Tu rculosis League and the Richland County ealth Department as a public service. ILI LSV NRRW Omicron Delta Kappa Revises Point System For Membership; Dan Gibbes Elected President Chi Circle of Omicron Delta Kappa, national leadership honor society, has drawn up a new point system, printed below. The society was founded in 1914 at Washington and Lee University and has circles in most of the nation's lead ing colleges and universities. ODK was established to rec ognize and encourage a high level of achievement in scholar ship, athletics, socials, religious activities, publications, and speech, music, and dramatic arts. Chi Circle, an outgrowth of the Senior Order of the Uni versity, was chartered in 1927 under the leadership of Dr. Havilah Babcock. Officers of the circle for the spring term are: Dan Gibbes, Jr., president; James Moise, vice-president; Mart Smith, Jr., secretary; and Ralph Lewis, faculty advisor. Minimum requirements for consideration for membership are (1) outstanding character, (2) junior standing, (3) C plus average, and (4) 100 points as evaluated by ODK point system. Notable changes in the new point system are: (1) Beaux Arts and Cotillion Clubs dropped from list, (2) points in athletics reduced, and (3) scholarship requirement raised from C to C plus. The Purdue exponent tells you how. Two students, a boy and a girl, were enjoying a refreshing smoke in the morning air. A large fuzzy dog ambled up and flopped down on the step below 'where they were standing. "If that animal ever gets near a fire, he'll make a beau tiful blaze," remarked the boy. The next minute it hap pened. The .girl dropped her cigarette, unfortunately it rolled off the step and disappeared into infinitesimal crack between the dog's back and the step, still lighted, that is. Both did their best to move the dog, but he merely sat and pondered them sorrowfully. He knew there was no imme iate danger for the burning end was toward the step. If Rover would have remained there, however, an all over hot-foot. He didn't! * * * * And then there was "Cookie," a coed at the Woman's College of the University of North Carolina who returned to her room to find an excited roommate saying, "Cookie, rou've got a box! It says so on the call board." "Cookie" rabbed the slip of paper, slid down the six banisters and lialed the number on the back of the permission slip that said, "You have a box. Please call 8165." A man answered and "Cookie" asked, "Do you have a box ;here for Clara Jean Cooke ?" "Well, ah-we have just gotten our new 1947 models in .oday. Had you placed an order?" "I merely received a message to call 8165, that there was . box waiting for me. Who is this please ?" "I am night ambulance driver for Forbes and Murray Funeral Home." Should it be added that the box was needed for the room mate who engineered the whole slip? * * * * Indiana University has finally hit upon the latest in ani nals to represent their alma mater. It had been thought hat all types of animal life had been represented in the 3uggestions for school mascots, but the latest idea has proved this thinking erroneous. The suggestion as described by the owner, is a beautiful and docile animal with a long and bushy black tail; it is :lassified as a pet pole cat. No fumes! * * * * While listening to the symphony the other evening, Herb Blotz of Northwestern was disgusted with the static caused by a razor next door. When a hut-mate asked which se lection was playing, Blotz snapped, "Razor Concerto by 3chick." * * * * From Texas Christian University comes a tale about a :ertain English instructor, Miss Rippey, who wrote on the. board, "Jack is a captain," and went on to explain that in this case, the word captain was a predicate nominative.
