Chick'en In The Rough
By CHICK SHIELS
We are just about ready, to write off another semester. In
a matter of days the new term will present itself and with
it comes many new and varied activities. Things look fairly
good from the inside of the Chick'en House. The Bird Quint
is regaining the "spit and ginniger" that was lost to them
for awhile. (We had no opportunity to ree-port on the gang
and their feud with the Purple Hurricane, but here's a
"Skol" for the best.) The Johnson Jouncers will go back to
work soon in hopes of retaining their clean slate. Thus far
the job is one well done.
The wimmin again take the matter in their own hands
with a little Iritra-mural basketball. The flurry to dig up
respective coaches has been attacked with mucho gusto.
The members of the Varsity are going fast as the Greek
letter gals and the other groups seek mentors. It rather
amuses the on-looker to think of a hot cager taking a crew
under his big, brawny wing for the coming Intra-mural sea
son. The fact is well known that male basketball is just a wee
bit different from the female brand. The coaches will have
to learn right along with the young ladies. For example: In
women's leagues, there is little dribbling, you seldom move
with the ball and generally feature no fast game that is so
prominent in the men's circles. But the outcome will be well
worth a note. We can see Nick Esterhay, Al Adams og Henry
Martin (or any other member of the Johnson crew who has
taken over the coaching jobs for the girls), forget them
selves against Clemson, North Carolina, etc., and stop dead
with the ball remembering the rules of the fairer sex. From
under the barrel, we don't think that it would make such a
big hit. (But boys will be boys . ..)
Comes a lad into the sporting picture here at Carolina who
all of you know, but probably have never met. Monsieur Don
Barton climbs up into the driver's seat of the GAMECOCK
Sports Dept., where he will do the job with the same fine
quality that has earmarked his efforts before. Don, a na
tive of Anderson, S. C., spent many moons in the employ
of Uncle Samuel and has been here for two semesters, which
looks good to us. He will be remembered for his magnum
opus in the Christmas issue entitled, "'Twas the Night Be
fore . ..", in which he put forth the best style seen in the
Sports Dept., in quite some time. It is with great pleasure
that we of the Bald Headed Chick'en House Keepers (Local
990) hand over the crop, saddle, bit, and reins to Don Bar
ton with the sincere wish that he might bring home a win
ner and march into the circle for the. wreath of roses. With
the coming of new life into Sports Editorship you may ex
pect the best from now on. The bald one will move across
the page to the 'lead story" pigeon hole while Don puts
forth the col-yum. It has been our pleasure to bat this thing
out twice a week for the last term. So it's yours Donald, me
boy, take it away
Rex will take his football aspirants out on Davis F'ield in
the first week of February for the spring work and in so
doing we all will have a first hand guess at just what the
1947 issue of Gamecock eleven will be. Many things are on
the docket for the men and this thought is emphasized with
plenty of Hard Work. At that time we will see just who will
wear the Garnet and Black when September rolls around.
Personally, we look to the spring session with high expec
tation.
That just about does it for the last time. Here and now we
lock up the Bird House, toss the key away and see how the
rest of the world lives. And so on this happy note we ree
main, yours truly, unquote . .. adieu.

The Citadel fell before the im
roving Gamecocks, 62-35, in a
Vednesday night tussle in the
ield house. The Bulldogs were
ever a serious threat to the three
ull teams that Coach Johnson
ised during the game. Al Adams
urned in an excellent defensive
ame, along with engineering the 4
,arolina offense and dropping 11
oints through the hoop. Cantore

vhile Talus racked up 10 in the

3plit In '46
Carolina and Furman divided a
air of games in the 1946 cam
)aign, the Hurricanes annexing
i0-42, in Greenville, and U. S. C.
winning here, 58-50. This year
Furman has an exceptionally tall
irray of players, enabling them
:o handle all comers thus far with
omparative ease. Both the Birds
mnd the Hurricanes have defeated
Wake Forest this year, with U. S.
C. piling up the greatest margin.
Records of both teams this year
indicate that a close battle is in
store.
