Chick'en In The Rough
By CHICK SHIELS
Had a long talk with one of collegiate football's unsung
hero's during the Christmas carousing. The name of John Lu
jack will strike a resounding note in almost everyone's mind.
It will be recalled that one J. L. piloted the Fighting Irish
from South Bend to many wins this past season. His was
the task of controlling the tricky "T" at Notre Dame. But
few can call the name of his understudy ! The lad that filled
those big shoes of America's number one choice to guide the
"T". George Ratterman is dubbed by most sports writers to
be the least publicized star in college ball today. Ratterman
is quite a man ! Although barely touching the twenty mark,
he carries the distinction of being the third freshman in the
history of the Indiana institution to win four major mono
grams. His is the honor of rifeling 26 points through the
hoop in his first appearance at New York's famed "Garden."
At the close of his frosh year he was chosen "All Madison
Square Garden."
George is a slender athlete, standing a freckle over six
feet and rattling the weights around 165. To look closely
at the Cincinnati product the eye will see the possibilities of
a basketball player with maybe a little tennis and golf tossed
in on the side. It will certainly never vision a footballer!
Here comes the surprise! Few know it but George Ratter
man engineered the Irish to 14 out of their last 18 touch
downs, during the 1946 season. That's not bad in anybody's
country !!! It is even more savory when the reader con
siders the fact that N. D. whipped all comers and drew a bye
with talented Army. (Or vice-versa!!!) Off the record a bit,
Ratterman is consistently An "A" student. That should be
indicative of plenty right there.
Both Lujack and Ratterman are Seniors when the 1947
season presents itself, so it will be interesting to note how
the Leahy machine will choose its QB. Probably the only
drawback George will have will be his inability to run hard
with the ball. He passes well, punts accurately and "field
generals" like a charm. But we shall see !
Here on the roost things stack up well for the coming
term. Basketball has the lime-light now, boxing will soon
share it. Then baseball and track will make their '47 debuts.
The athletic prospectus looks very bright for the G&B, along
with their followers. As mentioned before, the basketball
team and Frank Johnson have the middle of the road now.
Don't be too critical of the results while the Gamecock five
was on the road. They met good opposition and turned in a
fair card against same. Tech might have been a little dif
ferent had the quint seen action before this season but the
Bradley Tech and Western Michigan bouts were called for.
These outfits are rated high in the nation's ranks. We, of
the Second Guesser's Group (Local 509), look for the Birds
to do themselves justice in the days to come. It is quite an
other tale when you're on the road and have no support
from "your boys." With said support (and how is your
larynx, this fine day, hm-m-m-m???) the tribe should show
well.

As High Scorer
By BOB ISBELL
Wake Forest's Deacons fell be
fore a victory hungry Gamecoc
cage team Tuesday night in the
first home game of the season.
After losing three straight on the
road before the holidays the Caro
lina quintet showed promise in
their 54-41 win over the Deacon
five before more than 3,000 home
fans.
Cy Szakacsi, Carolina guard,
was high scorer of the game with
13 points. Henry Martin, a Bird
forward, racked up 11 points. Phil
Cantore had 10.
The score at half time stood
at 21-18' in favor of the home
team. The second half was de
cisively Carolina's as both teams
showed determined effort to sew
up the game.
Wake Forest threatened early in ,
the game behind the hustling of
center Deran Walters, who acted
as the key man in the Deacon of
fensive. Henry and Gentry also
stood out in the Baptist's line.
The Gamecocks play Georgia at
Athens Fridhy night and Erskine
at Due West Saturday night. The
next home game for the Garnet
and Black team will be with the
Citadel Bulldogs on Wednesday,
January 15.
An even larger crowd is expect
ed to turn out in the University
Field House for this affair, weath
er permitting. Rain prevented
Tuesday night's attendance from
being a capacity crowd.
