Gamecocks Chick'en In The Rough By CHICK SHIELS The football season is over. ' The equipment is in thi process of being stowed away for another year. All of thq shoes that crossed many double stripes, the pads that mad so many blocks sting and the helmets that blasted so man: holes wide open are finding places in the storage room i1 the Fieldhouse. The University of South Carolina has doni a good job with their 1946 gridmen. The best in a lonI time. With talented wins over Newberry, Furman, Clem son, The Citadel, and Maryland the 4,115 strong can wel be proud of the men carrying the Garnet and Black. Thre< of the better clubs in the Southland, Alabama, Duke ani Wake Forest added wins to their score sheet at the expens of the Gamecocks. 'Bama found the going rough. Duk< and Wake Forest were better off, they met a team riddlei with injuries. One that tried desperately to make the bes with what was on hand. Each member of the Bird crew and the entire coaching staff deserve the highest prais from the student body and administration. The season just completed is a test. It is a test of wha will come next year and the annums to follow. It is a tria ground giving adequate proof of what must be cleared ui so that next season,, the Carolina warriors may finish an other successful schedule. From one down on the bottom of the heap, we salute the products of Coach Rex Enright and his assistants. The job was well done. It's been a long time coming, but on Thursday evening, th Block 'C' Club and guests will dance to the smooth offering of one Freddie Slack. The organization has gone to muel trouble to insure the finest in entertainment at this semi formal affair. Tickets will be on sale in the Post Offic from now until time to dance. The prices of $2.40 and $3.6( will prevail. Slack has a current favorite on wax, in a littl ditty entitled, "Your Conscience Tells Me So." Earl "Sheriff" Dunham, Pat Thrash, Steve Nowal Bo-Bo Carter anld Bruce Tate said goodbye to football glor with the Wake Forest game. All turned in a fine perform ance as a swan-song gesture. The "thinking" and fiel generalship of Dunham was good, the work by Thrash, Car ter and Tate also was commendable. That tackle by Stev Nowak was perfect. He knifed his way through thre blockers to spill the passer in mid-air before he. had a chanc to get rid of the pigskin. The paid admissions approve of that bit of work also. Coach John McMillan, last year's mentor, came all the wa from his post at South Georgia College to see the lads worn Had little to say about things in general, other than it wa good to see the Birds in action once again. Bryant Meeks was the over whelming choice for the center position on this year's Associated Press All-Southern Conference team. In gaining this recognition for outstanding play, Meeks left Ralph Jenkins of Clemson, last year's All-Southern choice, down among the honorable mentions. Bo Hagan and Dom Fusci were voted on the third team, while Earl Dun ham and Red Wilson received hon orable mention in 'their positions. Dominate All-State U. S. C. snatched five positions on the Associated Press All-State team, five more on the second team, and one on the third. Meeks 'unanimous choice), Dunham, e Wilson, Fusci, and Hagan were on the first eleven. Bob O'Hara, Kale Alexander, Doyle Norman, Max Walker, and Red Harrison made the second team, and Jim Hunnicutt landed a post on the third.
