Chick'en In The Rough

Saw Big Steve Trewhella last week-end here in the Capital
for Homecoming. He had many interesting things to tell
about activities in the Marine Corps. For the last month or
so, the former Garnet & Black basketballer has been work
ing out with the Quantico Marine five and has, at last, won
himself a regular berth with the Leatherneck courtmen.
Steve, it will be remembered, starred here at Carolina for
two consecutive seasons under Johnny McMillan and Frank
Johnson. Both years he copped many honors for services
rendered on the hardwood. Facing a sixty game schedule,
the Quantico Gyrenes meet such outfits as Duke, Virginia,
North Carolina, Tennessee and other teams in the East and
on the Seaboard. Steve, an upper Michigan product com
missioned Lieutenant last June, said that his mates are ex
pecting a rugged time all the way but have a wealth of ma
terial to cope with all kinds of situations. Passed the word
that many of the starters and reserves are former college
standouts, who have decided to donate a wee bit of time to
the Corps. A sidelight on the Quantico season is the fact
that the team is flown to all encounters via C-47 which
makes for better travelling and much quicker means of ar
riving for the respective frays. Trewhella didn't mention
much about the activities of the Marines proper. Did say
that after the bucketball season has been run off he might
be seeing a little of China, on the house! I
We quote from the Editorial page of the University of
Cincinnati weekly which has decided to take the negative
stand in regard to another "Powder Bowl" in that end of
the country: ". . . It is undignified . . . cheap . . . and also
unladylike. Women students have no business on a football
field. Such a move is nothing more than a disguised pub- I
licity stunt. It would be a disgrace to our University. So 8i
an administrative bombshell crashed asunder the dreams of '
spirited co-eds. As a novel means of obtaining money for a
the campus World Students Service Fund, members of two
sororities proposed last week to have a touch football game -
in Nippert Stadium preceding the Western Reserve game.
It was to have been a humorous exhibit. Times out for nose
powdering, pre-med students serving as physicians in charge
of hang nails, and football thrown in on the side would have
been featured. The co-eds read about a similar contest
which is an annual affair at the University of South Caro
lina. This year the sorority women cleared $2,000 which
they presented to a worthy campus charity. But of course
it was at the cost of their dignity. And we always thought
the Southern Young Ladies the ultimate in femininity."

get the word.)
"Better late than . . . " The Band deserves a hearty
word for their terrific exhibition at the Homecoming fest
last Saturday. The mob here 'bouts owes a lot to a very
few. The whole performance was beyond reproach and the
appearance of the music-makers was a most welcome sight
to many. (. . . well I guess ! ! !) For two straight weeks
the band has put forth with all possible. You couldn't have
asked for any finer display than the one at Maryland.
A word from the Block "C" Club. Tickets are now on sale
for the gala showing of Freddie Slack, Dottie Anne Dare &
Co. at the Fieldhouse on the night of 5 December, from nine
until one o'clock. There will have to be a curb on the sale
due to lack of space so it will certainly behoove all who are
interested to get "tepid" and purchase above mentioned
duckets. Any member of the Block aggregation will be
happy to remedy the call for tickets and in a few days there
will be a special booth in the canteen or thereabouts to alle
viate the rush on various members of the Club. The Letter
men of the Campus are going all out to make THIS dance
the best one that Carolina has yet to experience. Time to
shine, so on this happy note, we ree-mnain yours very -truly
...unquote . .. adieu .. .

University of South Carolina
basketball candidates are getting
down to hard work in their bids
for various positions on this
year's squad. Some fifty hope
fuls are holding daily workouts in
the field house in preparation for
the opening game, less than one
month away. The Birds play
Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Dec. 14.
Coach Frank Johnson faces the
difficult assignment of choosing
from this abundance of material
a quintet that can best represent
the school on the hardwood. The
process of reduction has not yet
begun, as practice sessions have
been confined to basketball fun
damentals, but the ones who show
the most promise will stand out in
more advanced stages.
Among aspirants for starting
berths are a few leftovers from
last year's squad and several men
who have had experience at other
schools. Many of the tryouts
stand well over six feet, giving
the team prospects of being dan
gerous under the basket. Others
are lacking in height but possess
the important elements of speed
and deception, so necessary in
working the ball into scoring ter
ritory. It is difficult to name
outstanding individuals at this
early date, but Carolina fans can
be assured that there will be sev
eral on the team who are capable
of contending for scoring honors.
