Birds Cut Hi Chick'en In The Rough By CHICK SHIELS The grand exodus to Greenville, via Route 76, has been completed and the Carolina Students are none the worse for the jaunt. Our team came from behind after a slow start to wax the Hurricane into submission which made things even better for the 2,000 wearers of the Garnet and Black. Greenville and confines didn't offer too much to any of us and there will probably be more gripes about the hos pitality of that fair town than not. Would like to take this space again to toss out a profound bow to noble men and women who followed THEIR team into battle and gave so fully with the support. Really it was a pleasure to work for such a responsive crew. Those footballers appreciated your effort too. Ole Sheriff Dunham, aided by the "men of Enright" chalked the two tallies that sewed the match up while Bubba Lane, Honorary Mayor of Florence, S. C., added two more perfect conversions to run his list to five in as many tries. The hometowners did look twice when "Skeeter" Coyle of the Furman Fold dashed and dodged for quite a spell to score the first "TD" of the eve standing up. That lad and his running mate, Charlie Truluck, had to be given a lot of credit for the show they put on. Those laddies are mighty shifty and fast on their feet. But the Birds not to be outdone in their brand of ball marched right back up the turf to count the first of two markers of the night. As the second half got under way, Carolina kicked off to the hosts. A bad boot, some heads up ball in regard to the free ball on the kick off rule, a few chosen plays by Enright & Co. and that ended the scoring for the night of 11 October as far as Furman and Carolina were concerned. Carolina did not exhibit the style of ball against those Furmanites that they featured in the Alabama tussle a week before. But regardless, the final score stood at 14-7 as the cheer-weary fans left the stadium. Just a few gatherings from the mob: One very sore spot in the entire evening at G'ville was the lack of police escort for the ballclub after they had put forth 60 minutes of bodily contact. That was rather weak on the part of the Greenville Police Dept! Sitting in a crowded bus with all of the boys hot and tired and having to wait whle ivome elderly gendarme waved hik arns and did almost a com plete flip, was just a wee bit too much to take. Then after leaving the "PARKING LOT" (never let it be said . . . ) the team still had to wait as the bus picked its way through the city streets. It marked the first time that we have experienced no motorcycle or police escort in almost two years of travelling with the team. Other cities and schools have been most gracious in this regard, why should Green ville be one of the lost lambs??? While on the subject of this and that in the up country, do you know that the team and coaches were not provided with programs after the game? The business manager of USC had to go and buy some programs for the coaching staff to use during the game. Somebody was slipping there at the Stadium. Speaking of programs, how about the ones turned out for the Bird-Purple bout? The pur chaser certainly did get a first rate look at the "entire" Furman team while hardly even knowing who "the other guys" were. We were always under the impression that PROGRAMS were a pictorial review of BOTH clubs plus list a bit of information about each starter or regular warrior. Maybe times have changed? ? ? ? ? Partiality is always bad! It reflects too much upon the man or school. One thing that bothered a lot of Carolina rooters was the fact that the Public Address Announcer at Furman was definitely one sided inl his portrayal of the gante and facts concerning the same. Several mentionings of "terrific," "stopped cold," "great" and others too numerous to mention in regard to the Hurricane left quite a sour taste on Carolina tasters. Notice the Public Address Announcer at the Stadium here in Columbia sometime, he is about as impartial as they make 'enm. (He's also a Carolina grad.) Of course we know that the natural reaction to all of these many gripes would be to say, "Yeah, you're just prejudiced." That's far from right. We really try to look at the situation with an open and clear mind but some things just rub the wrong way. We all make mistakes. You'll notice that they STILL put erasers on our lead pencils too. Before too much more, leave us say congrats to the Carolina gridmen for the smooth show put on the other night. Let US say thanks to you STOODENTS for the terrific rise in "School Spirit." Keep it up and remember, ". . . Beat Clemson, Beat Clemson, Beat HELL out of Clemson . . . " On this happy note we remain yours very truly . . . unquote . . . adieu.
