The gamecock. (Columbia, S.C.) 1908-2006, October 08, 1946, Page Page Three, Image 3
The social chatterdashery has been giving with stuff (talk,
that is) that sounds very much akin to some often heard
singing commercial-the one about "rush, rush, rush" . . ,
but, not for orange crush. But, soon the tune will change and
giveway to something more concrete such as the masses that
are pledged to this or that fraternity. Now, for the time be
ing, we will have to content ourselves with talk about these
party-goings and-doings.
BUZZ NUMBER ONE: Phi Kappa Sigma has been giving
out with some heated rush parties since rushing officially
opened ... among these was a breezy affair out Sesqui-way
... and Saturday they added to their list a Post-Alabama
game spaghetti supper strung out for actives, pledges and
rushees at Frank Griffin's.
BUZZ NUMBER TWO: Pi Kappa Phi came across with
a crowded smoker-party that gave way to small groups that
went beer busting after the close Thursday evening ... An
other post-Alabama game affair was tossed by the Pi Kapps
when they ventured toward Lexington for a lakeside supper
at John Carroll's place.
BUZZ NUMBER THREE: Stepping to the tune of tradi
tional efforts Lambda Chi is furnishing transportation to
and from the football games for the rushees and their dates,
followed with a semi-formal shin-smasher at the Columbia
Hotel ballroom.
OPERATOR'S TIME OUT: Pi Kappa Phi recently elected
Hugh Vincent as their Inter-fraternity representative. This
job was supposed to have been held by John Gannt, but John
4 decided to be a man of the world and withdrew from school
before this semester flung itself upon us.
Special elections by the AE Phi's find Sara Friedman,
treasurer; Annette Crane, rush chairman, and Shirley Ger
gel, editor . . . Independent girls elected Jeanne Johnson
president, Ann Coleman, vice-president, Lacy Butler, secre
tary, and Billy Ann Theodore, treasurer.
KAPPA DELTA, PLEEZE, OPER-: KD will capture the
attention of the female gridiron fans at the half of the Pow
der Bowl game with what is termed as expert drilling this
side of military-Harry Hewell is the teacher of these lovely
high steppers. Margaret Ready will be platoon leader to 29
KD sisters. We'll be all puffed up and ready for the Powder
Bowl half.
THOSE THAT ARE BACK: Returning to the ranks of
* Phi Sigma this semester are Armond Bodie, Frank Griffin,
Jimmy Williams, John Bumgardner, Melvin Steele, Bob
White, "Goggie" Eager, Jeff Long, George Caughman and
Phillip Calvo. Rumor ha; it that the Alpha Zeta chapter of
Pi Lambda Phi has organized once again on the U. S. C. cam
pus. To those who remember pre-war times and to all new
comers this means an addition to fraternity life here. Plans
are under way for a gala social season which will commence
in the near-very near future. Pi Lambda Phi started at
U. S. C. in 1920, became nitional in 1938.
FEET THAT WILL TRIP: The feet of Pi Kapps and
rushees will lift themselves lightly and jively at an informal
dance to be given at the Columbia Woman's Club come Thurs
day night-music will be served up on platters of platinum
jive and silky waxings . . . other feet that will trip this com
ing week will be those of the Phi Eps when they come across
with a cabaret dance out Arsenal Hill way ... Phi Kappa
Sigma will be giving a double feature "light fantastic" when
they put on a dance-banquet come Wednesday night ..
thus will be the pedal-lings of the final rush week.
OUTSIDE LINE: Sorree, the outside is bisee!

Art Awards May Be Given
Again,YaghjianAnnounces
Professor Yaghjian, head of the
University art department, has
stated that he hopes his depart
ment will be able to present the
eight art awards which were given
last year. These awards are to be
given to the best students in cos
tume designing, interior decorat
ing, art appreciation, art history,
art education, design, drawing and
painting.
A marked increase has been
shown in the enrollment in art
classes. ClasseN,in art appreciation
had to be limited because of the
lack of a large enough lecture
room. Courses in sculpturing,
sketching, and graphic art had to
be cancelled on account of .small
class-room facilities. The art de
partment has been promised a new
building, but at present, nothing
definite has been planned toward
this.
