The Birds will launch their various marches from this "T", which can be as explosive as Mr. Big and Mr. Little-Blanchard and Davis. With Ineat on the line and plenty of power and deception In the see ondary, the Gamecocks should em ploy this formation with mucho gusto. ' Laval Is Tricky Man With the coming of the New berry Indians into Columbia on Saturday, Billy Laval will make another appearance. A few years ago, the Newberry mentor march ed a club out on the field that was creditable due to the fact that Clemson fell before his regime for about three seasons. He returns time after time with his Newberry charges and only one thought that being to beat Carolina. With these facts it will be well not to underestimate the power or de ceptiveness contained in the New berry Indians. Meeks To Mainstay Line For the second consecutive year, Bryant Adams Meeks, Jr., will be the main cog in the Gamecock line. He is bolstered in his task this go round with such rugged and ready lads as, Dom Fusci, All Southern Tackle in 1942; Max Walker, former Georgia Pre-Flight Guard, the Alexander combo which is ma terial enough to protect the tackles. Doyle Norman, a new comer to the Gamecocks and Pete Lane, last year's guard choice, will work well. At the ends, which have been hit the heaviest by in juries, will be a toss-up between All-Southern Pat Thrash, Pat Lennahan, Bo-bo Carter and Red Wilson. The backfield will be a New Managers Now At Hard Work The "behind the scenes" men of Carolina's football brigade are ready to take the field. These are the managers, the boys who do practically everything from han dling the equipment to treating minor cuts and bruises suffered by the players during games or prac tices. The 1946 Gamecock managers will be headed by "Tex" Badens, a senior, who is in charge of the equipment. Ross Williams and Fred Cross, both freshmen, will perform the duties of- the asit ants. Charlie Thompson, a studett at Dreher High School, will also be on hand to help out. With a larger squiad than usual and the prospects of a banner sea son, additional tasks have been added to those of the managers, so these boys - should be kept plenty busy this fall. For Comin By RED TYLER Our sports editor dashed up to me last week, looking like a mad rooster, and stated spouting his general opinion of school spirit on the Carolina campus. "It's N awful," he said, "we've gotta' do something about it. We need pep rallies and new cheers and above all more spirit among the students." I readily agreed with him, see ing that our general attitude to ward the success of our grid team has been lagging, so with a hearty promise to attempt to do some thing about this sad plight I set about to rectify it. Now when one thinks of schoM1 spirit one naturally thinks of the loyalty to the school. At dear Car olina we are suffering from a lack of this "loyalty". Not that the sons and daughters of our great institution are anything but loyal, but simply that our institution of higher learning is over-run with a group of "Cow-detts" who cannot forget their one or two quarters at a certain agricultural school in another part of the state. This group, In a vast minority on our campus, runs around grip ing about conditions at Carolina, and comparing our needs with the great opportunities offered at said agricultural school. They rant and rave about Carolina's administra tion, about the living conditions and above all, THEY gripe about the lack of school spirit portrayed deep secret until just about game time, but look to Jim Hunnicutt, Red Harrison, "Droopy" Atwell, Jack Couch and others to give the opponents many headaches if and when the "T" begins to explode. Birds Have Seen Hard Work The coaching staff works on the fundamentals of the game all dur ing the week and then Saturday sees a ful aA Ird scrimmage wherein they determine the prowess of their charges. Little "Whitey" Jones, a Chicago product, has shown his flying heels to all comers in these hard work outs. The whole picture is very muddled to the laymen, but the tilt Saturday will be the proof of the pudding as far as Carolina and their season is concerned. Saturday morning a, former "Cow-dett" who knows s about a cow or a motor than I do about Business Math was bragging about the shellacking that h4 and his former institution was , going to lay on our fair eleven. I flew off the handle, and with much more verbal force than tact, I promptly asked him to begin his journey to purgatory, by way of Clemson. He hemmed and hawed around for several minutes, finally stam mered out something about his fears for Carolina and drooled off, a little surprised that anyone dared speak harshly, and that is hardly the word, of his former, and I HOPE his future institution of higher learning. This is exactly where we can start the bpll rolling. Tell all of these "liabilities" that if they don't like Carolina and what Carolina stands for there are plenty of other colleges and universities that they can attend, and with our sincerest good-byes. After a few of these liabilities are put straight we can all settle down and get behind Coach Rex Enright and the whole Gamecock Squad. When Carolina opens with Newberry on Saturday the whole student body should turn out, in force, to show that we can support our squad and that we will. If we can't back Carolina in little things how can we back her in big ones? The "ole Carolina Spirit" that we have all heard about-and some remember-is going to get started again on tlis campus. More of those old pep rallies, burn the Clemson Tiger and above all take sides for Carolina; let everyone know that it is ours and that we are proud of it. Carolina's cheer leaders have been selected for the coming year, and plans are being made to get a uivy u a CamuNanna ceers mimeo graphed. Get a copy of these to every freshman and transfer in the student body. When Carolina meets Newberry next weelewe will stand in a group, heads high and we'll shout out "We hail thee Carolina". The list of sporting events will be able to satisfy the most particular type of tastes. With such notables as horseback riding, folk dancing, tennis, golf, swimming, basket ball, volleyball and pool, the wom en should have a well-rounded list of attractions. Mrs. Verdanna Craig heads the physical education department, with Mrs. Moses, Mrs. West and Miss Franny Sloan assisting her. The Women's Athletic Association is linked quite closely with the physical education department. Frances Smith, attractive presi dent of the W. A. A. skid in a re cent interview, "W. A. A. will sponsor intramural type tourna ments in basketball, tennis, bad minton and swimming. A meeting will be held at an early date to arrange the final plans for this undertaking." These tickets will be offered to students only and will be good for seats in the sec tion reserved for students. This will make it possible for persons enrolled in the University to have guests at South Carolina games in Columbia. Ample'seating space will be provided to accommodate the student-body and those who hold date tickets. Tickets may be purchased at the Athletic Office, which is lo.. cated just south of the field house. Date tickets for the Newberry game will go on sale today, Wed nesday, September 26, and will be obtainable for purchase this day only.
