AA On The Ball With Ish Moore Jumping Jimmy Ratliff will be hopping again today, this time for the Southern Conference title meet in Chapel Hill. Coach Dupree is taking along seven of Carolina's thinclad sparkplugs to show the people up there in Southern Yan kee Land just how we fine upstanding Gamecocks do things -and by the time this epistle is off the presses, "Birdog" will be warming up for his two mile hop and the rest of the la'ds will be getting ready for their events. Incidentally, this will be the first time that Ratliff will have to sweat out either of the hurdles-North Carolina's Chuck Sim inons hasn't been defeated as a "jump boy" this season either. But we'll put.our two bits on Jimmy today-since last Wednesday was payday! We sallied forth to Newberr,'s Indian grounds Wednes day for that little game of water polo between our slugging Gamecocks and Newberry's scalping Indians. Needless to say, it was quite a debacle-even the influence of "Bull" . (My friends call me Jim) Fulghum couldn't do too much for the Bird nine. As the Jim Pinkerton Fan Club (Local 136) would say, Pink really put on a one man show for Carolina. Catfish's boy vent the whole way for his team mates, pitching good steady ball most of the way-and in addition, led the hitting with three bingles for four trips at the plate-two singles and a double for the ex-leather neck! Catfish really shifted his hoys toward the last of that tilt-in the eighth, pitcher Ray Claffy was in right field, second baseman Johnny Skalangya was in center, and Pepper VanHowell occupied the left garden! We kinda spec that it would've been another Carolina win job, but the rain was just a little too much for our landlubbers. There'll be some more of that mucha hot slugging in the Field House the 27th when the Civilian All Stars square against the Navy champs. Our boy Joe Piedmont will be promoting the deal again-this time with the help of Blue Kep president Jack Whitlock. That all-important third man in the ring this time will be Coach "Toughy" Shi-and as usual, "Doc" Crawford will be on hand to see that things are under hand. The hottest slugfest of the night will come off when Tar Heel Jack Summerlin begins to swap punches with U. S. C. varsity boxer Manny Merchant. We've had the pleasure of seeing "One-Punch" Jackson fight at North Carolina, Miami, and also here at U.S.C., and Manny's record in the ring as a "Fighting Gamecock" speaks for itself-so we'll be forced to take time out from our lucubration Monday night to see that little contest. WAA hurler Marion Gibson couldn't do too much about those faculty home run -kings in their softball contest last Monday afternoon. All the profs, from Carolyn Gable to Admiral Smith seemed to have just what it takes to show 4 the WAA athletes that a few more 14-mile hikes would be necessary before there'd be a WAAvictory. But then, the girlai can still come thru with a clean slate, since old man weather came thru in the nick of time Monday to call off the debacle. We'd like to put on record our apology of last Friday morning to the fine up)standing gentlemen of Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity. It seems that we sorta mixed up the order of the Sigma and the Kappa and gave credit to the wrong gang for that swell p)erformance put on in the intromural track meet by George "Sunboy" Morgan and his lads-and after the one-man show l)ut on by the Florida lad, it's only right that he should be given due recognition-even in a one horse column like "ON TH E BALL"! He is to re port there on September 1. The announcement was made by J. M. Thrash, president of South Georgia College. According to the announcement, McMillan will coach both 'basket ball and baseball at his new loca tion. While coaching these sports at Carolina, he won state champion. ships in both. McMillan's career as a football coach has,been outstanding. Gradu. ating from the University of South Carolina in 1941. he coached the Sumter high eleven for two highly successful years. Returning to Carolina in 1944 he served under Coach ("Doc") New ton until the fall of '45 when he was named head coach of USC. At :that time, he w.as only 26, one of the youngest coaches at any major college. A native of Fitz, .raid, Ga.. Mc Millan coached X lightweight Bird eleven to the foll,owing record. Duke 60, USC 0. N. C.. where they are entered in the Annual South. ern Conference Track and Field Meet. Coach Sterling Dupre will put the cream of the Carolina crop onto the cinders today and tomorrow and his choices are expected to make a good showing for their Alma Mal er. Jim Ratliffe will be the lcading contender and will run the high and low hurdles. Ratliffe is unde foated so far this season and Le holds one of the highest scores for an individual in the conference. Warren Foote will be the Caro. lina representative in the high jump.
