On The Ball With Ish Moore Those bouts in the Field House Tuesday night were really rugged! And promoter Joe Piedmont managed to drag in all the glamor of a real honest-to-goodness pro boxing ex hibition ... even to the extent of getting a crowd of almost two thousand roaring enthusiastic fans there to cheer for their favorites. Having the Navy band really helped too . we almost (almost, that is) felt like jumping into the ring for a few swift left jabs when George Auld and the boys played "The Star Spangled Banner." Whether they were on the sending or whether they were on the receiving end of those terrific punches, every fighter entered in the whole tourney . . . preliminaries, semi-finals, and finals . . . give evidence of having plenty of the stuff that makes up an All American man. Congratulations and bouquets especially to "Most Promising Boxer" Marion Watson and "Most Popular" fighter R. D. Wilson. And then, there're the other champs -Gus Lunsford, Wayne Tye, Bobby Block, Chuck Spann, George "Chesty" Farris, and "Rabbit" (Dynamite Dan) Daniels. As Catfish always says, "You just can't make chicken salad. . . ." But the diamond lads will be out for a little chicken salad tonight up Greenville way-Baptist chicken salad this time. We'll just stick our neck out this time and lay down some two to one odds that the boys come home with that Furman bacon, two big wins, and that all-in vigorating feeling that they're without a doubt the best nine baseball players in this Palmetto state! I Incidentally, we lost that bet last week . . . but then, we just didn't think that the Blue Hose could luck out on that one . . . even if the game was being played on a washboard field. Our boy 'Arry came thru with a 400 yard bingle into center field . . . and that P. C. gardner closed his eyes, ran like T-hail, stuck up his mitt, and robbed Parone of the best "homer" of the season! Yes . . . the bases were loaded ! But congratulations, Blue Stockings, we'll say our prayers next time too. For fraternity brothers, George and Steve Trewhella were really slugging! For the first two rounds, we kinda thought that both the lads were sorta tired of living and were doing their best to get to the promised land . . . and all that time we were moving our chair back just a little bit further, hoping that none of those wild blows would miss and sling a 16 ounce glove out into our directiont. Not too incidentally, South Carolina could have a fewv things like the boxing tourney every wveek-maybe not in athletics, but anything that'd build up the old "Do or die for the old Maxie Monument" feeling into the hearts of even the lowest freshmen. No kidding, you all ..ounds good for the old Chicken Coop! Bobby Wickam just came into our little abode with the good news that the Bird netmen had (lone it again . . . those boys are headed for the Palmetto state championship . .. or rather, those boys and that girl are headed for the champ's throne. Sara Cline played with the gang Wednesday after noon, since P. C. insisted upon paying their feminine star . . . who, incidentally is Mrs. Robert Miller. the seventh rank ing woman player in the south. Bobby, Freddy Atkinson, and the boys are wandering into Tar H-eelia land this after noon for a return engagement with the Wildcats of David Ason college. Our money, as always is on the Gamecock lads . . . and dlarn it. we lost the last time that Rooster of ours squared off with the D)avidson Wildlcat! Navy Pistol Team I Record During Fo" BY PEPPER HOWELL On May 11, the University of South Carolina NROTC pistol team will fire In competItion against the other NROTC units over the nation for the national NROTC Pistol Trophy. This contest will come as a climax to a successful season in competition with other schools in the country, during which tho U. S. C. team lost only one match. Under the watchful eyes of Allen Davey, C.G.M.. U.S.N., the team composed of Bob Weher. Bob Boli, Dick Toupin, Blackie Stowers, Ar thur Lamb, and George Seymour, has developed into the ranking team in the U. S. These six men were chosen in competition with 15 con testants during the summer term of '45. They fire every day in personal competition and the high score is posted on the bulletin hoard at the NROTC armory each week. (Photo Faculty Matches Athletic Ability Against WAA Several faculty members of the University of South Carolina will match athletic ability against uni versity co-eds in a softball game to be played May 10 and sponsored by the newly-organized Women's Ath lefic association. Katherine Wallace, vice-president of the organization, has challenged Professor Christo-1 pher Fitzsimons of the Commerce department for the game. Each of these will be responsible lor se curing the players for their team. All players must know the standard rules. as it will be an official game. The game will be played on Gibbes Green or Davis Field. The WAA is also sponsoring a tennis tournament for girls which I will begin May 6. 'Skeets" llead rick. who is in charge of arrange ments, urges all girls who wish to compete to sign up in Sims or Maxcv lobbies before May 4. Only one requirement is made of players -six hours spent in practice. Prac tice time Is to be reported to Trudle Leonard or Frances Smith by May 4. The matches will not be played on the campus. Arrangements are being made with the city recrea tion committee to use the courts in Valley Park or Earlwood. Both sin gle and double matches will be played. Girls may earn 30 points for 6 hours practice: 10 points for en tering the tournament: 10 points for being in the finals: and 20 points for wInning the tournament. Another feature of the new WAA is a series of bikes on Thursday afternoons.
