Bob Bates and Bob Hirsch, in a formal debate at Di a\ton IHall Tuesday, April 30. The query was -"Resolved that the 'nited States should adopt a foreign policy which would he li te-cted towaid tihe establishment of free trade among the nations of the world. The U. S. C. team switched to the negative side of the quest ion at the last minute at the request of William and Mary. Dr. John M C'onnoughy, who "as judge of the debate, announced that the decision. Cat olina's favor, was awarded he cause of clear cut differences be tweeni the two teams. Robert Hirsch and RobertI Bates showed the quali ties that had won the champion ship previ.ously. I. Egree yCourt Degrees and 160 Commissions Will Be Presented Fleet Admiral Chester W. Nimitz will be awarded the degree of Doc tor of Civil Laws and will speak briefly at the 141st commencement of the University of South Carolina June 19, President Norman M. Smith recently announced. There will be two other recipients of the honorary degree at the same time. These are Christie Benet and George Wild. The University has awarded the degree of Doctor of Civil Laws only three times pre viously in its history. President Smith said. To Present Commissions Admiral Nimitz also will present commissions to 160 graduates of the University's Naval ROTC unit at the joint graduation and commis sioning exercises, which will be held at 8 p. m. on Melton Field. In case of rain, the exercises will be trans. ferred to the field house. At present serving as Chief of Naval Operations, the highest com mission in the entire Navy, Admiral Nimitz's fame rests principally on his wartime service as commander in chief of naval forces in the Pa cific, during which he directed the operations which shattered the mighty Japanese fleet and brought the Mikado's empire to its knees. Distinguished Career A r*;".z cf Texas, Admiral Nimitz was graduated seventh in his class at the United States Naval Academy in 1907 His distinguished career in the Navy was climaxed with bril liant handling of the most import ant of all Naval campaigns during World War II. Only Generals Isen hower and MacArthur among all American commanders played com parable roles. Describing Admiral Nimitz as "one of the great Naval command ers of all time," President Smith said that the University feels deep ly honored at his acceptance of its invitation. Admiral Nimitz will fly to Co lumbia from New Orleans, arriving the afternoon of June 19. Student Body Elections Set For May 20-21 Student body elections at the University will be held beginning May 20. the Student Council an nounced after its regular meeting Monday. at 4:15 P. M., in Flinn Hall. Elections foi president, first and second vice-presidlents, and secre rary-treasurer of the student body, and head cheer leader will be held on Monday. May 20. Tuesday, May 21. class elections will be held, with the run-over elections scheduled for Wednesday and Thursday.
