IIndependents Hold Carnival This Saturday The Independent Men and Wom en of the University are holding thbir annual carnival in fr6nt of the McKissick Aibrary Saturday from 7 p. m. until .12 p. m. Pro ceeds will go to the chapel fund. The carnival will include hot dog stands, dart booths, and fortune tellers tent. A cocktail booth, which has a floor show, will serve ice cream and soft drinks. - The two main attractions of the evening will be the "Hula Dancers" and "The Latin Dancers." The "Hula Dancers" are Burma Hardee, -Gloria Palladine, Morita Crymes, Laurice Rasheed, and Kitty Bald . win. The "Latin Dancers" will pre sent three specialty numbers. Mar celle Connor and Clifford Hardy will dance the Cuban rhumba and the Brazilian samba. Betty Connor and Tick Chapman will dance the Spanish tango. These dancers have been trained by the Foster School of Dance and will appear next month In the "Foster Follies" at the Township Auditorium. The election of the Carnival King and Queen started last week. This Is being done by selling votes for a penny each. The highest ten boys and the highest ten girls are running for the finals this week. Girls are: Betty Ruth Amaker, Le Claire Anderson, Bobby Huggins, Helen Gentry, Cookie Van Ben thuysen, Mary Frances Lee, Jean -Sergeant, Jean Lumpkin, and Nell Miller. The boys are Bob Weber. Char lie Park, Bud Moessmer, George Celusts, Ed Parler, Tommy Platt, Bob Sideman, Red Tyler, Bruce Tate, and Kennith G ylord. The ,King and Queen will be -crowned I at 10 p. m. Saturday. Following: will be an informal dance with music by Roy Ne'l and his Caro lina Cavaliers. Last year, $400 was raiAd for the Chapel Fund. e's arc C. D. .;imn Gresh am. and Duncan Heron. I Faculty Sends Six To Raleigh Math Conference Six Universi;y of Soumin carona faculty inembers attended the 22nd annual meeting of the Southeast ern Section Mathematicyl Associa tion of America held April 19-20 at North Carolina Stale University in Raleigh. Present were college and university professors from six states- Florida, Georgia. North Car olitn, South Carolina, Tennessee, and Alabama. Those attending from USC were Dr. W. L. Wil liams, Dr. L. V. Robinson, R. S. Pate. Nell Douglass. E. S. Shuler, and lielen Clarkson. Professor .1. D. Novak, who was unable to attend, wrote a paperl entitled "Projective Fleenode Ru1 ed Surfaces." which was read at the conference. The principal address of the meeting Was made by Professor G. T. Each of the nation's pbacetime Naval ROTC units has been as signed a quota of 270 men, and each has- been authorized td enroll a class of beginning freshmen not to exceed 100 men for the fall term and to fill up its quota with quali- 4 fied advanced students. The University's Naval ROTC unit was established as a perma nent peacetime organization. in 1940, but has operated on an active duty basis throughout the war. It will return to its peacetime status at the conclusion of he current term, June 19. I think that with everything involved, the devision justified the team's abil itY ." First Team This is Carolina's first debating team in five years, due to wartime conditions. About five months ago, several students and faculty mem bers began making plans for its re organization. Actual debating was started about tw%months ago. The i am recently won second place in thc South Allantic Forensic Tour nament among a field of nine con testing schools.
