The Birds evened it up in their part of the third when Rudolph got life on an error and scored when Ripley hit a hot grounder to second base In the next inning Duke went oui front to stay when they scored two runs on two hits and a couple of Gamecock miscues. After that the Blue Devils ran away with the con test scoring in every inning frorm their on out. Rudolph was relievec by Claffy at the beginning of th< seventh frame with two men or base. Claffy found it hard to rench the plate and remained In hnt water throughout his tenure on the mound. Brunson made his first ap pearance on the mound for the Gamecocks when he relieved Claffy at the first of the last. Brunson showed early season wildness and retired the side only after the Devils had tallied 3 runs. Jim Pinkerton start ed on the mound for the Birds and although he was in the hole many times during the contest he limited the Raiders to 6 hits while fanning 3 and issuing 4 free tickets. The Birds finally found their bat ting eye and slammed out 8 hits during the afternoon while scoring 5 runs. The Raiders drew first blood in the first inning when they reached Pinkerton ior two singles and man aged to score Simpson, Raider shortstop, who got on on an error. The Gamecock fielding was still spotty and this was one reason for the Raider scores. The Birds com mitted five mistakes in all. Giles Clark and Jim Pinkerton were the sluggers for the Birds getitng wo hits a piece. Pink came up in the sixth inning and slammed one of Pitcher Griffith's offerings high up on the left-center field wall for a double. Clark hit a line drive down the first base line in the seventh inning that went for a triple.
