over Pi Kappa Phi. The Gamecock
basketball star allowed only two

the opening of Carolina's Intra

South Carolina quartet their sixth
successive deefat in as many starts
Wednesday afternoon on the Forest
Lakes course. The Gamecocks man
aged to garner two and a half
points to fifteen and a half for the
Devils.
Frankj Garrett of the victors was
medalist with a low 71 two strokes
below the Forest Lakes par. Bruce
Davis, also of the Blue Devils and
ex-University of Miami star, turn
ed in the next lowest score, a par
of 73. Low scorer for the Game
cocks was. Arthur, who shot a 76.
In the first match, Garrett and
Smith of Dike defeated Dave Smith
and Arthur of South Carolina. It
was in this match that the Bitds

Perhaps the most versatile mem
ber of the faculty is the head of
the Navy P. T. department, John
Alexander O)oc) Crawford. Educa
tot, lawyer, athlete, herpetologist,
coach, philosopher---all these ad
jectives are needed to adequately
deseribe the "dean of the PE de
partment."
Doe is a native of Columbia and
a graduate of USC, obtaining a BS
degree in the class of 1910. Ile
served in the first World War as a
first lieute in t in.thi infantry and
in the summer of 1921 was on the
Anierican piistol team which fired
in competition with the ten Allies
in a match in Puais. After ihe var
toc returned to his alma mater to
study law. lie graduated in 1925
ind was admitted to the har that
vear. It was in 1921 that he came
to Carolina, however, and he has
been here ever since.

Matches To
Start Monday
Interest is high on the Navy side
of the campus as the first Intra
mural Boxing Tournament since
June, 1945, gets under way at the
Field House Monday night with the
initial bout scheduled to start at
8 p. m.
The Tournament holds a two-fold
purpose: First, to determine Regi
mental Champions, and second to
determine which Company w1oll re
ceive additional points toward the
Kiwanis Cup. It will run for a week
with the semi-finals being held
Wednesday, April 24, and the Finals
on Monday night, April 29.

army air corps vet himself, by a
score of 6-4, 6-3 in probably the
most thrilling matches of the day. In
another thriller, NROTC Ben Cham
berlin defeated Don Wartham,
Asheville, N. C. Tiger, in a close
match. 6-4, 7-5. Tracey Baxteri
NROTC student from Macon, won *
out over Frank Cartwright, Clem
son Cadet from Charleston. by a
close 7-5, 6-4. In the number four
pairing. Watson of Clemson down
ed Jack Hatch; and in the fifth
slot. Harris "Style" Todd defeated
Clemson's Thornhill.
