Samuel Lowry Latimer, Jr., '15L. of Columbia, addressed a recent meeting of the American Legion of Georgia which held its biennial sixth district convention at Macon, Ga. Mr. Latimer who is national vice president of the Legion, was also guest speaker at the Mulberry Methodist church in Macon, where he addressed the Bible class. Christie Benet, 'OOA, of Columbia. was elected to head the South Car olina Bar association at the annual meeting held in Columbia last month. Mr. Benet. former United States senator, is chairman of the board of regents of the S. C. Eugene Earle Stone, 111, '300, of Greenville, was recently featured in a story appearing in the Greenville Piedmont. which told of the part he has played in the manufacture of sun suits made by the Stone Manufacturing company of Green vylle. Mr. Stone, president of the 15 year old Greenville concern, Is p)rominent in many community activities, lie is a member of the American Business Club, is Director of the Greenville Chamber of Conm merce, and also serves as a deacon in the First Presbyterian Church of G;reenville. '41 nversity 'of South Carolina A Wg1 129, becutive Secretary and FOUR"CAROL AWARDED N, WALKER HUGGINS At least four "Fighting Game cocks" were' awarded the Navy Cross, on a par with the Army's Distinguished Service Cross and the Marine Corps Brevet Medal, during the Second World War. "For extraordinary heroism in combat action," the blue'and silver ribbon signifies the Navy's highest award for heroism, second only to the Congressional Medal of Honor. Lieutenant Walker, of Columbia, was awarded the Navy Cross foi his "great skill, daring and inspir ing leadership" in commanding a party from his submarine, the USS Earb. He led the party ashore on Karafuto island in Japan on the night of July 22. 1945, and planted explosives on a railroad, wrecking an enemy train. This was only one of many exploits for which the sub gained fame during the time Lieu tenant Walker was aboard. He may be addressed in care of Charles D. Green at Spartanburg. Commander Sallenger of Flor ence w~as the Atlantic fleet's first U-boat ace. He is credited with, or assisted in, four "positive" and three "probable" sinkings of enemy submarines, and in addition to th" Navy Cross has received the Silv, Star medal, the Distinguished Fly insgr s and letters of commanda tion. Edward D. Sallenger, Jr.. '35A. and Kenneth W. Sallenger. '43C. were also students at the Uni versity, as was Mrs. Edward D. Sal lenger, Jr. (Jacquelin Emerson), '35Ed. Commander Sallenger lives now at 221 Syrele Drive N. W., Navy Point. Warrington P. 0., Pensacola. Fla. Lieutenant Huggins, of Columbia. was awarded the coveted medal for his "extraordinary heroism as n pilot of a carrier based torpedo bomber" during the Second Battle of the Philippine Sea, October 25. 1944, when he scored a direct tor pedo hit on a Jap carrie. which sank a few moments later. He was a member of the famous "Fabled Fifteen" air group, commanded by the Navy's top-ranking ace, Comdr. David McCampbell. aboard the car rier ESSEX. Lieutenant Huggins plans to remain In the Navy, and may be addressed at: VT 17, Fleet Post Office, New York, N. Y. First Lieutenant Hopkins of Hop kins, wvas awarded the Navy Cross for his heroism in continuirg, de spite serious wounds. to lead the men of his company to 0op' n the pathwvay across a vital ridge on northern Iwo Jima in March. 1944.
