Henry Harrisse, historian, bibli
ographer, and alumnus of the Uni
versity of South Carolina, was dis
cussed by W. A. Foran, adjunct pro
fessor of history, and Miss. Martha I
Walker, library assistant, on the
University Library Hour ovet
WCOS, March 23.
Mr. Harrisse, who was horn In
France, came to this country as a
boy. He. after graduation from the
University of South Carolina, made
a living by teaching French in the
South. According to encyclopedias
lie obtained a law degree from the
University of North Carolina. Af
ter the Civil War, he went to Chi
cago to practice law. Not liking
his new profession, lie went to
New York. where lie made friends
with a collector of books about the
discovery of America. Mr. Iiarriss(
made a catalog of this collection,
which developed his interest in the
early history of America. and in
bibliography. le began writing
history and continued for 44 years.
Soon after lie started writing
Mr. Harrisse went back to France
and lived there until his death, but
le kept his interest in American
history.

Professor Mary Wheelet of the
4ociology department spoke before
the Carolina Christian Service
Club of the University of South
Carolina Friday evening, March 22,
on the U-nited Nationp Organiza
Lions and the eight basic religions
3f the world.
Miss Wheeler first paid tribute to
former members of the club, re
marking that she has kept up with
the progress of this club during
the past year.
Miss Wheeler said that there are
eight religions in the world which
have good-will as a basis. She
read portions of writings from each
religion to show the similarity. It
is important for us to know what
other countries believe in. for alt
1he nations of the world are bring
ing their beliefs to the UNO March
25. and each country will be
guided to a great extent by thei(
beliefs. Miss Wheeler explained.
This universal good-will has been
flaunted through the ."enturies by
wars and prejudices, but this feel
ing throughout the world is
greater than all the atomic bombs.
"We have but to use good-will."
said Miss Wheeler.

Problem Facing
KSK Gripesters
The need for more public address
systems and sound equipment, on
the University of South Carolina
campus was brought to the atten
tion of the KSK gripes committee
at the regular meeting last Tues
d-y night.
The Student Assembly, one mem
ber pointed out. is in dire need of
more adequate sound equipment.
Suggestion was made that outdoor
speakers (trumpets) be used In the
field house, when the Assembly
meets.
Another member said that the
University .needed two or more
portable systems that could be used
by all campus organizations.
The dangerous condition existing
because of the chains closing the
main horseshoe on the campus was
pointed out to the committee. The
drive between Preston and Burney
coUeges. proceeding around the
boiler room, and entering the
horseshoe by Rutledge was pointed
out as a hazard to pedestrians as
well as drivers. A isolution to the
problem will he sought by the fra
ternity.
The committee will ask that the
lights again be turned on the dome
of McKissick Library. as well as
other campus lights, so that the
campus may he seen from Sumter
st reet.
Action on a revival of Carolina
clean-up dIay by the fraternity is
still pending.
