JUST GUESTING

(Beginning with this issue, The Gamecock Sports Department will
feature a sports column written by guest writers. Today's guest is an ex
sports editor of The Record and an alumnus of USC.)
Things are really ruff these days. Proof positive of that,
fact in this column that Ish Moore swears will help fill up
a lot of otherwise blank space on the Gamecock sports page.
Seems to me there's a better way out, though. In the halcyon
days when I worked on the Gamecock and occasionally fret
ted about filling up those wide open spaces that just will
occur in a paper, the staff had a very handy solution. It
consisted of a large black blob of printers ink thrown on the
page, occuying as many columns as we wished. Underneath
in large letters was the coy statement. "The merchant who
doesn't advertise in the Gamecock is like this picture of a
fellow kissing his girl in the dark-he may know what he's
doing, but nobody else does!" Now that the dark secret is
divulged, Ish will probably be making use of same. Maybe
he might even feel that he oughtta do some research on that
part about the fellow in the dark . . . I spec . . . if he likes to
make sure (as all good editors do) that the stuff on his page
is the truth, the whole truth, ar nothing but.
MIGHT AS WELL BE SPRING
In the spring, a young man's fancy turns to baseball and
other diversions, so being apropos, I'll dig down in the files
and drag up two old basketball stories that I've been wanting
to tell for some time.
The first one has to do with the world tour that the New
York Giants and Chicago White Sox made a number of
years ago. The boys played an exhibition game in Cairo,
Egypt, which the big patootie, the Khedive, attended.
Anxious to discover how the poteutate liked their sport, the
sluggers cast constant glances during the game at the royal
box. They were disconcerted to find every time that the
Khedive had his back toward the diamond. They were at a
complete loss to understand his strange conduct, and sent
Germany Schaefer over to make inquiries at the box.
Presently Schaefer returned. "It's all right," he reported.
"One of those fellows with the funny hats says the Khedive
don't mean any disrespect to our game. But he figures with
so many American ball players here, he'd better keep his
eye on his harem!"
Story number two was relaye(l by a minister, whose
church sponsored a boys' baseball team as part of its youth
,program. The team was challenged by a rival group to a
game, and the pastor gave a special contribution of five
dollars to the squad captain. with the admonition that the
money should be used to buy balls, bats, gloves, or anything
else that might hell) win the game. On the day of the big
contest, the devine was somewhat surprise(d to observe noth
ing new in the club's pharaphernalia. He called the captain
to him.
"I don't see any new balls, bats, or gloves," he said.
"We haven't got any," the captain a(lmitte(l.
"But I gave you five (ollars to buy them," the pastor ex
claimed.
"Well you see," came the explanation, "you told us to spend
it for anything we thought might help us to win the game,
so we gave it to the ump)ire!"

One week ago today marked the
beginning of several intra-squad
games to determine the ability of
Coach "Catfish" Smith's current
baseball aggregation.
Last Friday afternoon the squad
was divided into two teams. one, o

Meeks Elected
Block C Prexy
The Block "C" club had its first
meeting of the current semester on
March 13th inorder to elect new
officers and discuss future plans.
New officers for the present semes
ter are: President. Bryant Meeks,
vice-president, Bob O'hara, treas
urer, Jim Ratliff; secretary, Jim
Hudson, and master at arms, Jim
Hunnicutt. Bob O'hara and Jim
Hunnicutt are returned veterans
and should lend an able hand in
taking the letter club back to the
top as it was in pre-war days.
Plans for the future were dis
cussed and included many and va
ried activities. There were sugges
tions of bringing a name band to
the Carolina campus, showing of
Carolina football movies to the stu
dent body, and possibility of a
spring sports carnival. The club
also discussed the initiatory cere
monies of men who received their
letters in basket-ball and boxing.
With returned lettermen like Dom
Fusci. Bo Carter, Bruce Tate, Bob
O'hara, Jim Hunnicutt, and Bruce
Tate this initiation should rCalI
prove interesting.
The meeting ended with great
enthusiasm beau:e the returned
veterans and the recently lcttere d
men are eager to do some goorl
work for the Gamecock campus. As
plans materalize the club will an
nounce them to the student hody.

The Gamecocks will inagurato
their 23 game schedule at 3 p. m.
Friday against a more experienced
Michigan State outfit on Davis
Field and follow up with another
game at the same time on Satur
day. The Greeks have already
played several games this season
with Southern teams; the last hav
ing been two games with the Uni
versity of Georgia Tuesday and
Wednesday. The Spartans have
consistently over the past few years
put out winning and flashy teams;
so the game should prove to be a
real test for Coach Vernon "Cat.
fish" Smith's 1946 baseballers. Ac
cording to Coach Smith, Chuck Ru
dolph will start on the mound while
Sonny Way will be on the teceiving
end for the Gamecocks.
For the second game on Satur
day, pitchers Dick Dusenbury and
Bill Driver will be available along
with several other promising as
pirants.

Lose Opener
Davidson college golfers iolled
up a 13-5 victory over the Univer
sity of South Carolina team this
afternoon on the Myers park course
to open their 1946 season. The Nas
sau system of scoring was used.
Allan Meade of Davidson was low
individual scorer with a 76. and
Dave Smith paced the Gamecocks
with an 82.
In the first foursome among the
No. I and No. 2 men of the teams.
Don Bryant made 1% points for
Davidson and Meade made 3; for
South Carolina, Smith made 1',
points and Bob Tutwiler 0. David
son got 3 points for the match.

sessions. The "old man" has been
trying to impart some of his wis
dom to his tyro charges. Offensive
and defensive signals were dis
cussed and a more general discus
sion of various tactics under dif
ferent game conditions followed.
Medals, Says Shi
In his latest communique to the
USC sports world, the Dean of
Carolina's In tra-mural program,
Coach Allen Shi announced that
twelve medals had been ordered for*
the winning team in the Basketball
Tournament which ends tonight.
Although the awards have not ar
rived it is requested that the tejA
turn in a list of the squad mem
hers.
Shi also announced that there
will he an intramural track meet,
consisting of ten events, to be held
some time in the spring term. Ar.
rangements are being made for soft
ball providing there is no conflict
with the Navy League which has
