ON THE BALL
Willi

That Gamecock is getting ready for its spring crowing
again . . . Davis Field is a regular sports arena these days.
Right after chow Coach "Catfish" Smith assembles his ag
gregation of baseball aspirants for a little batting and field
ing practice . . . and at the same time 77 hopefuls report to
Coach Sterling Dupree for track workouts in preparation for
that Duke meet on the sixth of April at four, Tiger-Killer
Rex Enright hustles his sixty bruising gridiron mighties out
for two hours of grunting, groaning and general all around
fun . . . while over at the University tennis courts Manager
Bob Wickham is having a hard time trying to pick his start
ing lineup for the netmen's first match with Clemson.
With the first test just one week from today those diamond
boys have been getting a lot of good work under their belts.
Over at batting practice the other day the Catfish had pitch
ers Dick Dusenbury, Chuck Rudolph and Lefty Johnson
throwing to catchers Meatball Meeks and Jack Krebs.
On third base. Johnny Skalangya was looking good, as was
Dick Fountain. Both seem to fill the bill for an experienced
man in that slot. At short. Pepper Howell was showing some
of his Alabama sandlot form. Before we really had time to
notice any of the other boys outfielder Tommy Cox. taking
his turn at bat, fouled one of Pitcher Chuck's curves off into
a sand lot and Manager Ed McMullen ;ent us chasing after
it. But slow as we are, Bill Carr (now the star halfback of
Doc Crawford's PT program) beat us to the pill and received
his reward. a pat on the back from new assistant manager
Ken luliman . . . accordiug to Mac. iwun is quite r foul bal.
(chaser) himself.
On the gridiron. Coach Rex has found after almost two
weeks of spring practice that he has the stuff that may
prove to be the thorn in the side of the Duke and Alabama
bowl plans for next fall . . . and there's no doubt in the minds
of Carolina fans as to the outcome of' a certain state fair
contest Mne sweet day in October. The old master has a pretty
good country line with Meatball Meeks. Jack Ilogg. and
Bruce Tate sharing the center slot . . . At guards, there are
Max Walker, Jake Land. Pete L-ane, Neil Allen and Doyle
Norman . . . At the tackle posts, there's much competition
between Dom lFusci, lZed Osborne and the Alexander broth
ers . . . On the flanks 1o Carter has been switched from tackle
to take over one lposition, and Bobby O'Hlara has been taken
from the backfield to fill the other. Scuttlebutt has it that
Enright will breathe more easily when Steve Nowak and Pat
Thrush finally talk Uncle out of that little white sheet of
paper.I
-Jim lIunnicutt's retu1rn fiom the bi'iny deep has holstered
the backfield considerably . . he looked muchas good at
the old right half spot in sr immage the other night, but he
has comnpetition in the form of Bud Moessner andf Jerry Nor
ton . . . At that all impI or'tant tail back spot ,Jack C'ouch has
been dIividling duities5 with I John ny O'NeilI (w~ho. incidentally,
has been attr'act ing much attention w ith his 75 yard b oots
lately) . . . Steamn-roIlers D ick l"rantz and Paul D)ellerbra
hav"e the f'ullback slot well filled while last year's fullback

With the first game only a mat
ter of days away, Coach Smith is
redoubling his efforts to round out S
a team. Practice hours have been
lengthened and drills speeded tip
to enable the selection of the vai.
sity squad.
Coach Smith has a wealth of in
fielders to choosp from as a dozen
or so have show,.n more than aver
age proficiency yet scooping up the
grounders. Perry. Andrews. Hughes,
Clatk. Willis, Fountain, Howell,
Skalangya, Newman. Roberts, Lan

mentor a headache in trying to pick
the varsity infield.
Behind the plate the situation is
quite dilteretil. Catchers are made.
not born, as the sayiig .goe.s. and
there at# few with enough expi -
ence to hold down this tough po.
sition. So f . Tlate, ]low !l. and
Way have shown that thvy might
be able to fill the post.
In the green section of tie dia
mond there is also a discouragiig
lack of abundance, but what there
