Chick'en In The Rough BY Chick Shiels .. ..this item could be classed as just a little off the rec ord but we of the Bald-Headed Scribes Union (Local 602 1-2) feel that it's worthy of some note. Friday nite saw the return of Roy Neal and his Music Makers to the dance scene and it was a welcome relief after some of the other musical "or ganizations" had made their futile attempts to please the Carolinians. Suffice it to say the Neal combe was terrific, and, coupled with the joys extended by a National Fraternal groupi the time had by all was much 4.0 to s y the very least. We didn't appreciate the Nifty Neal's until some out side material was imported and then the 2500 strong, here at Carolina, bowed profoundly to Allah for returning his # Music Prophet to our midsts'. Speaking for the vast major ity, many praises to Roy Neal and the members of his Music Lovers Clan for the best rhythm in these parts. Basketball We've varied from the Sports rail a wee bit so now's the time to cast a hurried glance at the doings here on the G & B roost. -, . hence-The Carolina Courtmen have been away from home for so long that they have almost lost contact with the campus crowd. Having met Duke again, Clemson at Clemson. Furman at Greeiville and Georgia Tech in Atlanta, the cagers have not given the home town folks a chance to strain their vocal chords for some time now. The Duke match, held in Durham, found the Columbians still on the short end of the count. This makes two times now that the Devils have given our lads a bad time of it. There was no excuse for the Clemson defeat, so the word came for those who jpourneyed to the Tiger liar. It could be chalked up to re taliation for the humiliation the Toothless Tig's suffered here in the Capital on Fair day when the Macmen stopped the Clemson powerhouse cold in their tracks 0.0. But that's neither here nor there, the fact still remains that 47-42 was the difference between a Carolina win and a loss. The Kay dets were waiting for our lads. They jumped to a very early lead and never relinquished their hold. Look to a Garnet and Black win here on the home hardwood when them Tigers visit the Chicken House. Furman also pulled a grand salami when they limited the Birds to 42 points and walked off the court with a 50-42 win. Lady Luck had growl0d in the Capitals faces again. This sounds like an apology clinic what with these many excuses, but we still contend that the tale will be told in a much different light. The Johnson five CAN produce. We all know that to be true and this will be evidenced when the men, come home for a while and know that they've got a local rooting section for support. Jest mark our words, Zeke! ! ! The dope on these individual games comes to us second hand, so we know none of the particulars first hand. The wires of the Associated Press told us that the Engineers from down Tech way hit Carolina hard with a 55-45 win on last Saturday night in Atlanta. It seems tht USC jumped to an early lead and then began giving way to the Tech five at the half when the count read 29-28 in the Jackets favor. Jim Nolan, a long and lean Georgia center tossed 25 markers through the hoop to walk off with all honors in that depart ment. "Cooter" Giles and Old Man Mallis accounted for 13 points apiece for the losers. That about brings the affairs of the hardwood up to date. We will offer one word of advice. When the lads come home for a spell or two (which will be the case beginning on Tuesday eve of this week) leave us all bend every effort to pack the fieldhouse up tight and let the warriors knowv that you (and we do mean YOU) are all for them by a goodly amount of the 01ld chip-chip, ya-ta-ta-ta, hubba-hubba or what have you. Boxing Something that wve've continually overlooked in these lit tie get-togethers has been the forthcomings of Coach Allen Shi and his Carolina leather-pushers. We'v'e seen these bat tIers putting in many an hour working out, doing odd mil lion laps around the track and trading blow for blowv in prac tice but we have failed to give credit where credit is due. The boxing team has partaken of two matches thus far and have lost both times. In true Carolina fashion they have hit the big boys first and have not bothered with little time ma terial. The North Carolina pugilists were too tough for the local crop and as a result the Shi Boxers were handed a 6-2 decision. .Joe Piedmont, a Charleston product, came away with the only victory as he annexed a decision in the 120 lb. class. Last Saturday night in College Park, Maryland, the sluggers again wvent down in defeat 5-3, as the University of Maryland hoisted a close one out of the coals. Again, wiry, Joe Piedmont took first blood for the Capital City Clan as he pounded out a Technical KO0 over Frankie Day in the 120 lb. class. Dick Dusenheury decisioned Billy Greer in the 145 lb. entry for the only two points that the Shi Sluggers were to take awvay with little pain or strain. "Manny" Merchant and "Crash" Krayac' drewv ties that gave the G&B their final counter to total 3 points. The outstandling bout of the evening was in the 155 lb. class when Maryland's Tommy Ma loney edged our own "Seaman" Saul. This event wvas the feature of the match. We note wvell that Jose Piedmont has taken his first two encounters in fine style. Keep this up, there Joe! Look to the return of the leather luggers so we can all get a glimpse of another Carolina activity. Right Off The Nest ...Ex-Baseballer and now a Gyrene, Don Estes dropped Sbek into Columbia for a short visit last weekend. . . he's1 down at Parris Island and says "Hi" to all the clan... said that the Clemson fans gave Junior Meeks and "Coo ter" Giles a bad time when the courtmen went to Clemson. ...probably haven't gotten used to the idea that the flaunt ed Tiger didn't win on Fair Day. . . and so It goes. . . The Jay-Vees have been doing right smart by themselves of late. .* . have won 5 matches and only dropped one. . . Bowling is becoming one of Americas favorite past-times ; id naturally we, at Carolina, should fall in line with the other trends of our modern times. Bowling presen's many advant ages both to old and young peo ple alike. Being a game of skili and cooredination it requires prac tice and patience. A bowling tourna ment at Carolina would promote good fellowship and good social contacts. It would offer fraternity and non-fraternity men an oppor tunity to engage in some active progiam in between sports seasons. Why don't we, at Carolina, get a howling league started next semes ter and make it campus wide. Arrangements could be made with some local bowling alley for reser vations on any convenient night. Plans could be made by'some inter ested person. . . . WHY doesn't someone get behind this move and get a CAMPUS WIDE BOWLYING LEAGUE OR BWLING TOURNA MENT started? Although the Birds led all the way, the tilt was a nip-and-tuck affair with nev er more than 12 points separating the two teams. The Gamecocks on the whole look ed far Improved over several of their last appearances, and com bined a tight defense with eagle eyed passing and shooting to avenge their first state defeat of the tem son two weeks ago against the Hurricane, 50-42. Their floor nlay looked a bit ragged right aft'er the intermission but the Birds soon pulled themselves togtther and beat off a dangerous Furman threat in the last few minutes of play. Bobby GiMes, Carolina guard, led the Birds on the attack with 12 points, but the play of Steve Tre whella at Torward was the bright spot in the Gamecock offense. Trewhella racked up four baskets himself to aid the local cause, but also turned in some beautiful floor work, both offensively and defen sively, and did a nice job of guard ing Ernie Evington, high scoring Furman forward, who made only two tallies while being guarded by Trewhella. The Gamecocks opened the high scoring battle when Steve Tre whella took the opening tipoff from from Foote and drihbled in to tally for thc Birds. But Stewart, the game's high scorer came right back to counter for the Hurricane with a one-handed shot from the foul zone to tie the score. The Game cocks then hit the scoring road an(t built up a 26-14 lead, the largest of the night, before the Furman quin tet could rally to stop them. The Hurricane roared right back. though, and sliced Carolina's lead considerably before the intermis. sion. At the halftime the score stood 28-22. The win put Sot.th Carolina back into the running for the state loop championship, throwing them into a tic for runner-up honors with the Hurricane behind the Clemson Tig ers. Friday the Gamecocks meet the Tigers in Columbia in a game that will in most probabilities decide the state championship for 1946. Sports re porters from the Gamecock tried to get a confirmation or a denial of the report, but were unable to do so. The article to being reprinted ir the benefit of those who have not already seen it. A high University of South Carolina official who declined use of his neme told the Asso ciated Press last night that Ver non (Catfish) Smith as football end coach and Fred Hambright as buck-a-month club secretary had been hired by the University in Its postwar renewal of a full-time athletic program. University President Norman M. Smith declined comment on agreement, that the unnamed official said had been reached by the trustees' athletic committee late yesteday, to hire the two men. Smith was an All-American end at Georgia in 1931, and Ham bright, a native of Clover, was an All-State blocking back and Jacobs blocking trophy winner at the University in 1933. Hambright niso will succeed Tatum Gressette, another one time University athletic star and former Citadel hend coach, as coordinator of the Uni.versity's athletic program. Gressette re signed last Friday. The buck-n-month club that Hambrigh will direct is an ath letic fund-raising organization established several years ago. Smith was rin assistant coach under Harry Mehre at Missis sippi until he entered the army, from which he recently was re leased. He was end coach here before going to Mississippi. Carolina could field a crackerjack team, which would be in keeping [with the University's post war athletic expansion. For those who can't seem to leave their erratic putters at home, and those unable to control their slices and hooks; an intramural, interfraternity, or open league could be conducted. Regardless of the setup, all those participating would benefit end another athletic representative of the University would add to the prestige of Carolina.
