Bird Cag( On .Deck with Bryant Meeks The CLEMSON Tigers are in town now and have come for the purpose of taking the South Carolina Gamecocks in stride, but I don't spec, do you? On January 25 the Tigers took an early lead, before Coach Frank Johnson's boys got the feel of things, and the Carolina cagers never caught up with the fleeing Tigers. Tonight Carolina will be out for TIGER MEAT and you can take my word for that. That Clemson crowd was all Clemson except a few loyal USC sup porters who braved the journey and the fans of Clemson to give the locals some moral support. The loss which Caro lina suffered was one of circumstance, so. tonight when that Carolina team goes out on the floor let's give them support and cheering like they've never had before. The fellows on the team want this ONE very bad and you can hell) them win it by giving them that support which they deserve. . . By the way that loss to Clemson was the first ever suffered by Coach Johnson since he took the reigns of the Carolina bas keteers back in prewar days. Let's hope he doesn't lose an other to them or anyone. Boxers Lose To Maryland The Carolina boxers lo.st a Southern Conference boxing meet to the University of Maryland last Saturday night in Washington by the tune of 5-3. This speaks well for our boys for its rumored that Maryland has the number three team in the country. Joe Piedmont and "Dick" Dusenbury won matches while "Crash" Krayac and "Manny" Merchant dre-w ties for the other Carolina point. These fellows have had time tq get in shape and get the feel of things out there and its showing up in their mtches. I was talking to some of the sluggers and they seem to think they can w%,in the Sou thern Conference championship. That would be a big feather in our hat and the hat of boxing coach Allen Shi. People down Athens way say that the "Big" man was quite a heavy weight in his college days. "Svede" Hanson will give you a little dope about a dressing room incident (lown at 'he Ga tor bowl if .you care to know about it. Coach Allen received the worst end of a small scuffle. .. Well, so much for these rough necks. My friend and fellow scribe, "Chick" Shiels, gives you all the dope about baseball in his column "Chicken In The Rough", but I'll try to give you a little enligiiteninent about the possibility of inter-collegiate games this spring and sum mer. *To the best of my knowledge the athletic department is working on a schedule and I hope to be able to furnish that information in the next issue of the Gamecock. There are numerous schools in the state, and a few service teams which wvill furnish outstanding competition for the Carolina base -allers if they field a team. Baseball is one of America's greatest past times andl should enter v'ery well with the Car olina athletic program. With the navy unit still intact, and many' returnedl servicemen, as well as up andl coming fresh men, the Gamecocks should be well represented on the dia mondl. Coach Vernon "Catfish" Smith, the All-American footballer at the University of Georgia, will probably an nounce a tentative schedule wvithin the next couple of months, Plans are now being madle and we should have the info r'eal soon, Mellon Field Active Soon Old Melton Field willagain be active very soon with the cleats of footballers pounding that turf each afternoon till dlusk rolls around. Peace time football will return to Carolina with spring practice because that is when football teams are made. Coaches Enright, Twomey, Smith, Shi, and Dui Pre will iron out all the kinks and then have the available time in the fall to polish the offense and dlefense. We can all rest asutred that Carolina will be well representedl on the gridliron next year. Practice will last approximately one month or six weeks and will give the coaches a well based idlea about them aterial for the coming fall. Intr-muural Basketball. Still Rolling The S. A. E. and K. A. fraternities are currently leading the campus intra-mural basketball tournament. Both have not defeats against them and are ridling that victory crest. There has been some very good games played in the field house and gym. Games are held each night, Monday through Friday, from 7-10. These games can present a good form of entertainment, if it may be called that, (luring the wveek~ for interested studients. Allen Shi, Frank ,Johnson, Vernon "Catfish" Smith, are former Bulldogs while"Rex" Enr'ight was head coach for the Ge'or gia team a number of years. What a coincidlence. . . The present Carolina basketball team is composed of me'n from 10 different states. Having 3 Georgia men, 3 men from Michigan, and 1 each from South Carolina, New York, Penn sylvania, Utah, Illinois, District of Columbia and Connec ticut. . . What do you think about that? . . . ,Jim "Freaky" Fulghum will be a candidate for' the Gamecock baseball team when the opening ,whistle blows, and reports say that he has begun training for it. Hasta Luego. srs Road Trips Net Nothing For Carolina By DAVE SMITH Two road trips to upper.SC net ted the Carolina Gamecocks exactly nothing in the win column as the Clemson Tigers took the scrapping Birds Into camp 47-42 at Clemson and Furman's Purple Hurricane blew the slipping Gamecagers into the coop by hitting the hoop for 50 points to the G&B's 42. It was Clemson's first win over the Birds in seven stars and their first win over a Frank Johnson coached team of basketeers. The Tigers racked up an early lead and never relinquisheA their game-winning margin. The score, however was close throughout with Clemson leading Carolina only 25 20 at half-time. In the waning min utes of the fray, however, the Birds soared to within three' points of Pruitt, Doyle & Co. But the Tigers snarled back with three quick bas kets and the age old rivals ended their first '46 fray with the Tigers copping by a five point margin, 47 42. Leading scorer for the evening was a Tiger, 6 ft 4 in. Marion Doyle, Clemson center, poured through seven field goals and two free throws for- a 15-point margin. Jim Reynolds and diminuitive Billy Pizza, Carolina guard, hit the hoop for thirteen points each, while Pruitt (the state'sl eading scorer), and Bird-Dog Thornton swished tihrough ten apiece. Then on Monday night the rustled feathered Birds left their home roost and ijourneyed to Greenville seeking condolence for Saturday night's loss to the Tigers; but Conch Lyles Alley's Furman charges had other ideas and handed the Gamecocks a 50-42 upset that still shakes the state's basketball realms. In their eracker-box like gymna siuim "Ears" Evington and Bill Stewart racked up thirty-one points between them and were the spark plugs that were needed to lpset Carolina. The contest was a closely fought one that saw the score tied many times and with Furman holding only a 23-22 lead as the half whistle soupded, hut the inspired Paladins came back strongly and luckily in the last half and pulled away from the Garnet & Black basketeers to blow their way to victory. Fouls seemed to be the order of the day as where were 43 personals called on the two teams. Carolina was guilty of 22 fouls while Fur man was being called with 21 mis cutes., In all, three players were evicted from the game, one Furman ite and two Birds. Evington with his grand total or 16 points was the leading scorer for' the evening being closely fol lowed by Stewvart wvith 15. All during the p.receding games, Coach Johnson has been trying to get an efective combination to gether to work as a unit on de fense as well as offense. During the Furman game last Tuesday, the five players who worked together best were forwards Thornton and S. TrewhelIa; guards, Mallis and Giles; center, Foote. Together they racked up 48 of Carolina's 58 points against Furman. Giles, an al-South Carolina full back this past football season, has Sterling DuPree, USC Track Coach, Out Of Servise With Sterling Dupree back from the Armed Forces after almost five years, the track prospects for the 194t; CiQder Men looks unusually good to the outsider. Dupree defi nitely knows his business. lie mer ited his sheepskin from Auburn University w%,here he excelled in track among other things. For three years. he held the 100 and 220 yard dashes down securely and captained the Tigers In his- senior year. The most outstanding feature in Du pree's cinder career canme wheni he was unanimously selected South eastern Conference Champion in his particular line, the dashes, during his Junior and Senior years in the Alabama Institution. On long shots, he ias shown himself to possess a v,ery ceen eye, and an unerring aim as ime and again he dismayed the lurricanes by swishing the ball hrough without touching the rim. Mallis IsOthe other halt of Caro ina's slow-breaking offense. By al ernating the ball,between hrnself iad Giles, Phil has managed to do iome pretty adept faking and ball iandling to keep the Birds out of trouble and under the other team's masket. The "Old Man" is right handy at tossing in those long shots himself. At the center post is long, lean -nd lanky Warren Foote. His main rorte is an ability to seemingly stay, in the air about Carolina's basket and tap in any stray shots. This gbility has kept him up on the lad :Ier of South Carolina high scorers, and has given him a legendary aste. The eagey center (that's a joke, son!) is also an expert on pivot shots. Jumping higher than his guards to drop in two more points for the Birds. Bird-dog Thornton has been al ternating the forward slot with Bill Pizza and between the two of them, have somewhat matched Steve rrewhella's fancy one hand shoti. However both Thornton, and Trew hella missed a couple of easy snow bird shots against Furman. Bill Pizza caused quite a bit of ,ommotion in last Tuesday's game b)y apparently putting a curve on his one-handed -shots. The hall, thrown from the sidelines took an unprthodox curve to swish through without hitting the rims. Steve Trewhella has been switch ing from center to forward and back again, and has racked up plenty of points with his peculiar style of off-balance shooting. To the spectator, it seems impossible that such a style of one-handed tossing 4 could pull Steve up to second high est scorer on the entire Bird Fiv'e. The Gamecocks have been practie ing relentlessly with an eye to wards the South Carolina crown.
