On Deck with Bryant Meeks With the new year we find all kinds of odd things and this includes a new column in the Gamecock sports page. I'm taking over where Saul Lavisky left off to relieve him of the over-load that he has carried for the past semester. I hope the news, whatever it may be, will be of interest to you. Shi Remains at USC It Will probably interest m'any students to know that Coach V Allen Shi, the football line coach, will remain at USC until June and maybe longer to have a helping hand in the organ ization of Intramural Sports. Intramural Sports are a defi nite advantage to college students and the guiding hand of Coach Shi should prove beneficial because he has workedl with students for many years since his graduation at the University of Georgia. Here's wishing him a lot of luck and may he be around a long time. Block "C" Initiation Next Week Approximately 24 men will be initiated into the newly re organized Block "C" club which has been one of the most active organizations on the campus in past years. To become a member a man must earn his letter in some major.sport at Carolina. The club is now composed largely of navy men because of the navy program at South Carolina. Many re turned veterans are coming back to bolster its activities and in short time the ole Block "C" should reign again. Next Friday will hold in store a big surprise and a lot of fun for the new initiates. The initiation will begin at 8 a.m. and will terminate at 9 p.m. that night. This one day should give the students more laughs than they have had in quite some time. As years pass by the members of Block "C" should be able to plan bigger and better days at Carolina. The ending of the war will bring more school spirit as far as sports are con cerned. Let's get behind these new letter men and make them appreciate the letter which thy will wear. Football Baiiqiet Soon Plans are being made to hold the annual football banquet, sometime in the near future. There is nothing definite yet but as soon as we get the. word on it we'll certainly let you know. There's scuttlebutt going around that there will be an in tramural league formed this basket-ball season in which the civilian winners will plqy the winners of a navy tournament. If so this should prove to be very high in competitive spirit. If my understanding is correct ,he civilian teams will come from various tenements and the navy teams from different platoons or companies. Well, at any rate there should be some swell basket-ball games in this Intramural league. Is This Right A few days ago some of the Carolina sports followers asked me what I thought about the BOOING at the basket-ball games in the field house. Being neutral in this argument I asked their opinions about it and this is the result.' More or less an official is dloing his best under the circum stances and really dleserves a big hand for his work on the court. Officiating is a very hard job and it takes a good man to handle a college game without making mistakes. As wve sit on the sidelines we are apt to see many things which the referee might not see. Tro these followers it seems that moan ing and yelling goes with basket-ball everywhere--even at Carolina. Another thing which these men condemned was the noise making while a visiting player was shooting foul shots. It isn't the players fault that the Ref called foul and there fore in all fairness to them this group of atmecock follow ers asked me to remind you that this act i .isportsmanlike. SBut, on the other hand don't ever let tha. \MECOCK spirit (lie. Make plenty of fuss and keep those guys on the floor hustling. Tonight when the Garnet and Black go out there against the Ole Citadel let's raise the roof off the field house. May no feelings be hurt by the small bit about the booing and always remember I was neutral. Beginning at 8 a. m., Friday morning, the 24 new initi ates will undergo various phases of the initiation program, until 9 p. m., that night. In past years, Block C has pre sented movies of Carolina's foot ball games to the student body for the admission charge of 10 cents. Plans are being made, once more, to bring to the student body some of the Gamecock games of '45. They also sponsored an excursion for all Block C men to Miami, Florida, and brought name bands to the Carolina campus. Ushering for box ing matches and other social events has also been done by Block C men. Some time during the year, they usually have an outstanding figure in the sports world at their ban quet. Block C this year sponsored a raffle before the home-coming Maryland game, in which gifts, given by the merchants of Colum bia, were drawn-for by Joe Patrone, past president of the Block C Club. The following men will be initi ated into the club on Friday: Bud Eades, Frank Scruby, Ira Schmidt, Tex Radenz, Hook Helme, Warren Spivey, Pete Lane, Jim Hudson, Ken Huffman, Hank Botkins, Bar rel Schmitz, Winter Griffith, Neil Cummins, Swede Ilanson, BobSide man, Rabbit Daniels, Bill Carr, Ed die McMillian, Tommy Howell, John Herin, Chick Shiels, and Charlie Bedgood. The current officers are: Presi dent, George "Papa" McDonald; vice-president, Charles "Dutch" Brembs; secretary, Bob Tindall; treasurer, Nick P"iilbin. George McDonald "Call Me Papa" Has 7'10" Baby George McDonald, husky Univer sity of South Carolina letterman, was late in arriving at the scene of the New Year's day 'Gator Bowl football game because he had to stand Stork Watch. McDonald, a 205 pound nil South Carolina tackle, became the father of a seven pound, 10 ounce boy just two hours after the USC grid sters had left for Jacksonville. He joined the team the next day in time to play a whale of a game at his usual post. Foote Is Trackman Too The University of South Carolina was certainly blessed this season when the Navy transferred Warren C. Foote to the Gamecock's roost. Coming here from Millsaps college in Mississippi, where he played first string center, Foote has start ed every game this season, and will probably start against The Citadel tonight. After completing high school in Boulder, Colorado, the young West erner joined the Navy and was eventually sent to Carolina via the NROTC in November, and if Navy plans remain the same, Foote will be with us till February, '47. Warren Is a definite advantage to the Garnet and Black because of his never-say-die spirit. His basket ball game is steadily improving de spite the indications of the Cherry Point encounter, and before the Gamecock quintet hang up their togs, every student at Carolina will hear plenty about this big rugged fellow from the old West. Besides his basketball ability, track Is another one of his special abilities. He runs the 100 yard dash, the 220 dash, the running broad jump and the running high jump. (His best effort in this event is around 5' 11", which is plenty good in any man's league.) Maybe when track season rolls around, Mr. Foote will be in th?re hotfooting it for the track team as he is in there plugging away for the cagers. Warren is well liked by all his team mates and is a definite ad vantage to the cause. Lot's of luck, Warren, and stay on the ball. NOTICE Equipment will not be re moved from the gymnasium without permission according to Coach Frank DeMars. Any civilian student may horrow equipment if he signs for it, but too many items have disap peared to allow indiscriminate taking of gym property. Already plans for Intra-mural basketball have been drawn up. and the appointment of I Allen Shi, as head of the tourna- I nMent has been announced. Shi, line coach of last season's football eleven will remain here at least un til June, and possibly longer. Shi held a meeting with team representatives of the intra-mural basketball council Tuesday, Janu ary 8 to organize the tournament. At this meeting he announced that scheduled play will begin on Tues day, January 15. Any organization, tenement or fraternity, that plans to enter the tournament must turn in their names and a roster of players to the athletic office before 6 p. m., tonight In order to be eligible to play. It was decided at the initial meet ing that each tenement would be allowed to enter a team. Civilian boys living in town may partici pate in the tournament by register ing at the athletic office to be placed on a team. Fraternities may enter teams with only civilian boys on their roster, but due to the navy's par ticipation in its rigid athletic pro gram, trainees will not be allowed to play with their fraternity team. The tourney will consist of a double round robin, In which each team will play two games with each participating teams. The intra-mural council will be nade up of one representative se ected by each entry team, and will iave complete control over the run iing of the tournament. Coach Shi will act in an advisory capacity 3nly on this council. Officers of the intra-mural coun cil selected to govern the tourney, !nd the playoffs are Al Wall, presi lent; Manning Harris, first vice president; Jack Rodgers, second vice-president; Johnny Roberts, sec retary, and Cooper MacEachern, treasurer. According to tentative plans, each Leam representative must record and turn into the secretary of the council, the reports and box scores of each game. At the end of the round robin play, the six teams to enter the tourney playoffs will be selected from these records. Officials for the playoffs and tourney games will be selected from the Physical Education majors and no man will be allowed to referee a game if his tenement or fraternity is participating. Permission to practice, however, must be ob tained from the athletic office. Practice basketballs will be let out by the Physical Education depart ment to the representative of the teams. The games will follow official basketball rules with twelve min ute halves and a five minute Inter mission. No team may start less than five men. If this number Is not present by five minutes after sched uled time, the game must be for feited. Teams are limited to 12 men, and only registered men may play. If ineligible players participate, the game will be forfeited. No mem ber of the varsity or junior varsity team will be allowed to play. Of ficials for each game will be pro vided by the athletic office. It is understood that individual awards are to be given to the cham pions and possibly the runner up. This will probably be in the form of a small gold basketball. This program will held the re turn of intra-mural activities to a pre-war status, and is designed so that every possible man will par ticipate in a sport of some type.
