Bethea, '106 of 'o ;umbia, was recently presented a certificate of merit by the members of Myrtle lodge, Knights of Pythias af South Carolina, in appreciation of his service in Myrtle lodge and as grand chancellor of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina. Ashley C. Tobias, Jr., '0'1,, of Co lumbla, was recently re-elected president of Organized Business in corporated, a South Carolina state wide group. Mr. Tobias, director of the Palmetto Life Insurance com pany of Columbia, is also active in many civic and social activities of Columbia. He has served as presi dent of the Columbia Executives Club, president of the Columbia Lions club, and as governor of the 32nd district of Lions International. lie Is a member of the Richland county bar association, the South Carolina Bar association, the Amer lcah bar association, and various other state and national organizi tions. Samuel Lowry Latimer, Jr., 'lSp, '15L, of Columbia, was elected one of the five vice commanders of the American Legion at the national convention held recently in Chi cago. Mr. Latimer, Editor of The State, is a veteran of the First World War, and has served as na tional executive committeeman for the South Carolina department of the American Legion. He has teen active as a leader in local and state Legion affairs throughout the ex istence of the organization, and was chairman of the South Caro lina delegation which attended the Legion convention in Paris in 1927. 1920-1929 Allen Izard Josey, 31.D., '23A, of Columbia, recently resumed his practice of internal medicine, after having served for almost five years with the armed forces. Doctor Josey entered the Service with the S. C. National Guard, and first was sta tioned at Fort Moultrie. Charles ton, with the 263rd coast artillery. He later went to O'Reilly general hospital, Springfield, Mo., where he was chief of the medical serv ice. Prior to entering the service, Doctor Josey practiced internal medicine in Columbia for a num ber of years. Jacob Davis (Jake) 11111, '24A, .'34L, of Columbia, recently resumed his law practice in Columbia, after having served for almost three years with the navy. Mr. Hill, now on terminal leave, held the rank of iteutenant commander, and served as executive officer of the naval training unit at the Uni versity of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N. C. Hie also madec a cruise with the USS William S. Ilobby, a navy destroyer escort. Mr. 11il1 Is a former member of the S. Patterson Wardlaw, '26G, of Co lumbia, .who celebrated a birthday on November 20, was recently fea tured in the "S C Birthday" column of the Charleston (S. C.) News andl Courier. We quote in full from the News and Courier: "Son of Andrew B. and Sarah Elizabeth (Thompson) Wardlaw, Patterson Warid law, ed ucational ieadler, was horn at Lib erty Hill In Kershaw county on No vember 20, 1859. After attending private schools in Abbeville, he was graduated from Erskine colleg,' then took graduate work at i'rince ton Theological seminary, Clark University, and the Universities o,f Virginia and Pennsyivania. After teaching school for several years, in 1899 he became superintendent of the public schools of Darlington,. serving until 1894, when he was appointed professor of education at the University of South Carolhna and later became head of the de partment of ediucation. For many years he exerted a strong and last ing Influence on Southern educa tion and on thousands of teachers who enjoyed the privilege of study ing under him. Hie was twice mar ried; first, to Claudia Edwards, and after her death, to Martha B. Lide. Dr. Wardlaw was chairman of the - - - Asst. In recogni tion of his services to education, Erskine College conterred upon him the degree of doctor of laws, 1906, and in 1924 Presbyterian College awarded him the Litt.D. degree. In 1939 he became dean emeritus of the University.
