Chick'en In The Rough
By
Chick Shiels
We're beginning something comparatively new in these
here parts so if youall people will just bear up under the
strain all will be well. Around the sports path at Carolina
Ole King Football is holding forth in grand style and oc
cupies the center of all attention.
Thus far, the Gamecocks (to bring all up to date) have a
perfect .500 percent average with two wins and a brace of
losses to round out the calendar. Being over loaded in most
departments, the Duke Blue Devils easily placed our lads
on the very short end of a 60-0 count, but on the following
Saturday, the Macmen laced "P. C." royally to the tune of
40-0 to build up the morale that was shattered in Durham.
Following the Presbyterian rout, in which all hands showed
up with the greatest proficiency, the Garnet and Black, with
all kinds of attacks, in the first half, hung the crepe on a
scrappy Gunner outfit from Camp Blanding, Florida, 20-6.
The third quarter saw the Infantry Blue swing into action
and make an impressive showing to scratch up on "T. D1."
and a load of first downs. But 'their streak was ended and
the Capitol City 'crew settled back on win number two. Trav
elling to Montgomery, Alabama, (courtesy of Brother Grey
hound), the Birds faced the Bowl Bound Crimson Tide who
were equally, if not more so, powerful than the Duke aggre
gation. 'Bama only used their first string twelve minutes
during the fray while their second and third proteges han
dlIed the main load. Carolina couldn't take the onslaught of
the Tide and a 55-0 loss was tallied. Newcomer, Harry Gil
m-ner, passing wizard of the year, did little of his famed
chucking but lit out across the turf for 50 yards and a score
to take all honors for the best offensive play of the game.
This about brings us to the right side of the ledger so
"leave" us a look at the near future . . . ah yes. For the past
weeL or so Johnny Mac has been giving the lads "the word"
on the Clemson game. (To outsiders, this. probably has little
significance but to the staunch Carolinian-WOW!) The
vurious dope sheets have been sighting Clemson as the de
cided favorite only on the records of the season thus far. . .
which is a poor standard to set in a tussle such as this.
About all we know is that the Gamecocks will be in top
physical shape and a good game should be brought forth.
Right OFF the Nest
. . . Welp they're dustin' off the Gamecocks' Cage at the
Stadium and that means the I)AY is jjust about here. . . . A
host of new material has been placed in Johnny Mac's hands
via the GEE EYE Bill. . . . These boys belong to the old
school of the body contact game, "hit. 'em hard and run where
they aint." . . . "Rapid Robert" Tindall is back on the beat
again and really going to town. . . . Noticing the fight and
spir-it for the coming Clemson bout, no' joke, the men mean
business on this trip. . . . Dumas (he'll tell ya all about it)
Turner doing a peach of a job as "General Manager" of the
team, much to the manager's delight. . . . Bob Sideman pil
ing the woodl on the fire in preparation for the coming ev'ent.
..* . ,Jim Mor' imore, good Cincinnati producILt, Phil Ball, sure
shot f'or' AllSouthern mention, and 1Henry Couch, hefty',
r'ugged tackle, all bid adieu to USC' after' the Clemson match.
. . . Phil Ball, by the way, made the final leap on last Satur
day right af'ter commissioning. . . . Best wishes, to a fine
fellah and a p)eachl of a ball playe r.. . . Talked to wily Billy
Laval the other night and he informed us that, ''There's only'
seven undefeated teams in the country andl we're one of
them." Hlow 'bout this? The former' Newberry clan wvill
think highly of this feat--it surely never happenedl when
WEwere there. . . . Amen.. ....he Gar'net and1( Black is
dlotted with very minor injiuries but will all be ironedl out by
game time, never fear. . . ..". ('. Il im"' (negro trainer)
*say, "Him have 'em flyi n" . . . quote. who-o-oo-sh, unquote.
. . . Trhat about runs the st ring out. your' bald headed scrib)e
urges all to "get hot" with the moral support and give all
toward the cause; this is "the" game to win and nothing is
quite as sweet to the warrior ear as a hearty cheer. . . . Hope
we've covereO all heah. The usual happy note-unquote...
adieu.

Crimson Tide
The Bowl bound Crimson Tide of
the University of Alabama rolled
unmercifully over the out classed
South Carolina Gamecocks to the
tune of 55-0 in Montgomery, Ala.,
on the 13th of October.
Starting their second string, the
Tide pushed to a score in three and
a half minutes after the opening
whistle had sounded and kept this
pace up all the way through the
fray. Although the visitors tried
every trick in the books to turn
the Tide away, their efforts were
in vain and the steady ground and
air attacks of the Crimson con
tinued.
The Gamecocks did, however, give
the crowd a little excitement when
Billy Carr heaved a long pass to
his running mate Bud Eades who
proceeded to dash deep into enemy
territory before being dragged down
from behind by the Alabama safety
man. Every spectator thought for
sure that the Carolina Crew were
good for a "T. D." at this point,
but an untimely fumble in the Gar
net and Black secondary proved
to be the end of the scoring threat.
Youngster llarry Gilmore, while
not toss ing his famous passes, did
spark the attack for the nation''s
number six team displaying fine
hits of running, one being a 50
yard jaunt through the entire Caro
lina team for a marker.
Linemen .. "Tex" Radinv, All-South
ern candidate Phil Ball and Junior
.\leeks showed up well for the home
Iown crew, while "Dutch" Brenihs,
Billy Carr and Ray Maginn did a
good job in the offensive depart
ment.
Coach Frank Thomas only work
ed his varsity 12 minutes all after
ioon, letting the second and third
stringers bear the brunt of the days
work.
Only minor brutses were suf
fered by the Carolina men and they
will be in tip-top shape for tomor
rows Clemson tilt.
