Thelma Ann Reynolds Mailed by the Alumn members of the Associal alumni in the Armed For on file in the Alumni 0 Reunion BEFORE 1900 Edwin G. Selbels, '85A, nationally known insurance executive, chair man of the University's board of trustees, donor of the Melton Ob servatory to the University and of his art collection to the Columbia Art Association, past president of the Alumni Association, has re ceived the South Carolina Ameri can Legion's 1945 plaque for distin guished service. The inscription on the plaque, which has place for only four words, sums up Mr. Sel bels' contributions as follows: "Ex ecutive, benefactor, devoted citizen." The Legion's Distinguished Service Award Committee are: Alan M. Paul, '14A, Beaufort; Dr. Wilmot L. McCutcheon, '99A, Sumter; John Osborne Reed, '22CE, Lexington; W. The presen tation was made by Doctor Mc Cutchen at the Legion's state con vention Aug. 29. 1900-1919 Gadsden E. Shand, Jr., 18A, 0CE, of Columbia, recently re signed his position as district pro duction manager of the War Pro duction Board in Columbia. He makes -his home at 306 Southwood drive, Columbia. Colonel E. DeTreville Ellh, '10A, *11CE, of Columbia, is on duty in the office of the Quartermaster General, War Department, Wash ington, D. C. Colonel Ellis, who served overseas in the European theater of operations, is deputy di rector for contract adjustment, and has supervision over the renego tiation, contract termination, and cost and price analysis activities of the Quartermaster Corps. Charles Mills Galloway, '07L, of Washington, D. C., formerly of Co lumbia, was recently retired from his position as counsel to the Comp troller General of the United States. He had served in this ca pacity for the past 16 years. Prior to his appointment to this position in 1929, Mr. Galloway had engaged in private law practice in Washing eew for ten years, and had also served as United States Civil Seiv ice Commissioner from 1913 to 1919, having been appointed to this po sition by the late President Wood row Wilson. He went to Washing ton In 1909 as secretary to the late Senator Ellison D. Smith. Before going to Washington, he was en gaged in newspaper work on The State In Columbia, and also served as clerk of the Southi Carolina State Senate Committees on Edu cation and Railroads. Mr G;allowvay expects to resume private law prac tice in Washington at an early date. 1920- 1929 William Wallace Altman, CRT, 27A, of Johnsonville, is serving as a radar technician with the Navy in the Pacific. He is wvearer of the American theater ribbon, the Pa cific theater ribbon with five bat tle stars, the Philippine liberation wibbon with one battle star, and the good conduct medal, lHe is addressed through the Fleet Post Office, San Francisco, Calif. Mrs. Marcel Mauduit (Mary Catherine Floyd), '25A, of Detroit, Mich., is a member of the staff of the. American library in Paris, France, and does special work for the army. Mrs. Mauduit has lived in France for many years, having been given French citizenship af ter her marriage to the late Mr. Mauduit. Bull, Jr., 25CE, of Georgetown, is command lng officer of a task group under the Operational Training Command Atlantic Fleet, He has been in command of the Minecraft Training Center, Little Creek, Va. Oscar Chappell Lemmion, '20A, '410, of Wlnnsboro, is connected with the Latta Motor Sales Com pany of Latta, and is engaged in extensive farming, lie formerly served as superintendent of the Pinewood schools for more than 15 years. Lient. Cmdr. Thomas Wesley Crouch, '27I0, of Columbia, recently received his present promotion in the Navy. He recently reported for active duty at the Naval Air Sta tion, Jacksonville, Fla. Herman Dewey McCarley, '20A, of Columbia, recently spent a leave at home after having served for 18 months with the Navy in the Pacific. During his tour of over seas duty, Lieutenant McCarley was assistant to Rear Admiral C. H. Cotter, director of the Pacific division of the bureau ofFards and docks and commander o construc tion battalion forces in the Pacific area. He served as liaison officer between the office and all supplies of the 14th Naval District which supplied the Seabees. Prior to en tering the service, Lieutenant Mc Carley was connected with the John C. B. Smith, real estate agen cy in Columbia. Mrs. DeWitt Brunson (Mary Wil lis Osteen), '26S, of Sumter, recent ly assumed her duties as assistant to Edward Watson Rushton, '40G, of Columbia, director of the 12 year program for public schools and supervisor of high schools. Mrs. Brunson has served as a teacher, principal, and superintend ent in school district number one in Sumter county, and as superin tendent of Instruction in the ele mentary schools of the county. She has also served on the summer school faculty at Peabody college. Nashville, Tenn. Mrs. Chariton L. Talbert (Opal Cooper), '28Ed, recently returned to Columbia after having made her home in- San Francisco, Calif., where Mr. Talbert was stationed with the Fourth Service Command. She is now making her home with her parents while Mr. Talbert is on duty in the Pacific area. Wade Edwin Eargle, '29EE, of Wilkinsburg, Pa., was recently ap pointed divisional budget adminis trator of the Westinghouse Electric and Manufacturing Company. Prior to this appointment, Mr. Eargle was associated with the Time and Motion Study activity of the Trans portation and Generator Division of Westinghouse, and more recently has served as supervisor of Time anc Motion Study. Eugene Ryan Crow, '24G, of Co lumbia, recently resigned his posi tion as principal of Columbia high school, and has accepted the posi tion of superintendent of the Sum ter city schools. Mr. Crow has served in the educational field of South Carolina for many years, and was president of the South Carolina Education Association in 1940-1941. HIe also actedi as state high school supervisor from 1942 to 1944, and since 1941 has been a member of the South Carolina state board of edlucat ion. Johnz Frederick (Jack) Alliston, '261A, '280, of Columbia, p)rincipal of Wardlaw Junior high school, has been namedl to succeed Eugene Ryan Crow, '24G, as p)rincipal of Columbia high school, lie has taught in the Columbia City schools for a number of years, and has served as p)rincipal at Wardilaw since 1943. Guy L. Varn, '420, of Columbia, has been appointed dlirector of the newly created position of director of pupil-teacher p)ersonnel of the Columbia City schools. Mr. Van will deal with problems arising In teacher education, certification, guidlance, promotion and placement of students. Mr. Van has served as principal of Schneider school for nine years, and is active in ,educa tional and community activities in Columbia. Lieut. Col. William 0. Callahan, '33A, of Columbia, was recently awarded the Bronze Star medal for "meritorious achievement in the performance of duty in the postal service with the Allied Air forces in the Mediterranean Theater." Prior to entering the service, Col onel Callahan was employed at the Columbia post office. Sgt. Joe Parrish Boyd, '39Ed, of York, was recently promoted to his present rank at an Eighth Air Force Station in England. Wilbur Lester Shealey, ARM 2-c, '46E, of Columbia, recently returned to the States, after having served for ten months as radioman and gunner on a navy landbased Libera tor search plane. Marion Neal Hunt, WAC, '40A, of Columbia, recently com pleted special training at the Wom en's Army Corps school for person nel administration at Purdue Uni versity. She is stationed at Boll ing Field, Washington, D. C., where she is commanding officer of the WAC detachment. Tracey Carlisle Jolmson, CEM, '41A, of Wagener, recently received an honorable discharge from the navy, after having served for over six years with that branch of serv ice. He served overseas for 41 months. He holds the Good Conduct Medal, the Navy American Defense Service ribbon with a bronze star, American theater ribbon, Asiatic Pacific ribbon with seven stars, and the Presidential Unit Citation.
