Greetings, sports fans. It is with a great deal of pleasant
anticipation that I sit (lown in this corner of the page to
bring you this column for the next semester. (Draft Board,
* please take note.)
BYE-BYE
The Gamecock last semester had a grand guy for Sports
Editor. May I say to all his readers, none of you will miss
him more than I will. )ennis is gone, but the Sports page
must go on.
FACTS
No sports editor can run a whole page by himself. le
must have his staff, and so to you good people who read
this page and enjoy it, as well as to those insignificant
few (?) who don't, I would like to introduce the sports staff.
According to an old, old custom, it's ladies first, so first
comes the lady of the sports staff, Miss Naomi Staley, who
wrote the story on the girls' gym about three columns over
to the right.
Next come three very nice and friendly NROTC boys.
They are Bill Bader, who -wrote the football story; Frank
Scrubie, wh,o wrote about the all-star softball team, and
Chick Shiels, who wrote about the coming swim meet and
PT for RO's and V-12's (looks like alphabet soup).
Modestly, I have reserved me to the last. I wrote the
story on the new gym coach, and ask only that you not
judge me by this, my first column.
Ant so, down to businless.
FOOTBALL
This week, everybody is interested in the beginning of
. summer football practice. I was out there Monday, and the
sight of so many muscular, sun-tanned boys filled me with
pleasant visions of things to com,2.
rhis is Johnny's McMillan's first year as Varsity coach,
but he has nine returning letternien and about 90 other
fellows that hope to grab the Tiger by his tail and make
him yell Uncle.
Practice is held on Melton Feld each afternoon from 5:10
o'clock to 6:45 o'clock. It will probably take Coach McMil
]an several weeks to work the large group down to a prob
able three teams, but good luck. fellows, I've got my fingers
crossed for you.
NATATORIUM
I have been asked to announce that in the future the
swimming pool w%vill be open on a new and improved schedule.
Lifeguards have been provided, and anyone wishing to
to drown themselves will please pick some other spot, as
the pool has been cleaned. The new schedule:
Wednesdays and Fridays-7:13 p. m. to 9 p. m.
Tuesdays and Thursdays-4 p. m. to 6 p. m.
Saturdays-3 p. m. to 5:30 p. m.
MISCELLANEOUS
If a person can judge the popularity of a sport by the
interest it attracts, by far the most popular sport at Caro
lina is Pinball Machine-ology.
There are twvo in the canteen that attract loafers like
honey attracts flies. Comments, suggestions and sympathetic
grunts and groans fall at random from the many specta
tors. And from among the ranks has arisen a true cham
pion, D)on Marchette.
On the Rocket machine, D)on is jiust plain mur-der !!
F'erociously growling, and bouncing his small frame against
the unwilling machine, Don manages to squeeze "just one
more hit" and, somehow, rarely loses. If you're interested
in a well developed skill, look for lion Marchette and that
"extra hit."
ATTENTION, PLEASE
Before I close, I want to exp)lain the p)rocedure of comn
plimenting or criticizing the sports page.
If you have a compliment, or a nice word to say about
anything on the sports page, you may contact any rep)orter
or me. Preferably me. However, anyone having a complaint
or wishing to make dlerogatory remarks will contact Miss
Anne "Scarlet"' Searson. Managing Editor, who will p)rob
ably bite your head off andl add1 it to her collection.
But now, joking aside. This is YOUR p)aper. YOU make
the news. If you know of anything of interest in the sports
field, p)lease contact any one of the rep)orters as soon as
possible. Anyone who has written a sports story may hand
it in to me, and it will be given consideration along with
allthe other stories. Once again, I say, "This is YOUR
paper!" Make of it what you will.
FIN IS
And finally, in closing this column. I want to quote from
my favorite reporter. Walter Winchell. ". . . The writer who
aims to write nothing offensive to anyone, presently writes
only hymns and leaflets explaining the Sunday School lesson ;
and then only children read him: and they read him because
they fear they will he scolded if they do not. Only INTER
ESTING writers are actually read."
I wonder howv many readers got THIS far?
-SAUL LAVISKY.
