'Coker Vacat
"In This Corner"
By Toni Simpson
UNDER NEW MANAGEMENT
All th' dust has been carefully swept under the rug, the
'Welcome" is on the mat, and we're open for business.
Sorry, no air conditioning! With the sororities safely back
on the move to their old haunt, Sims, I can now devote my
entire efforts and grey hairs to the filling of these twenty
inches. With malice toward none and with an inkling of
co-op, rwion sprinkled in spots, "Th' Corner" won't go un
furnished. Please take note! I am the sole owner of Box 1186!
WITH A RUSH, PUSH AND A SHOVE
Comes a new semester, comes the rushing.... Fraterni
ties were in high gear over the past weekend. . . . The KA's
ventured out to "Toots" Walker's cabin near Pontiac. 'Tis
rumored that they held the 1-A priority in the date division.
. The Sigma Chi's held forth at the Legion Hut introduc
ing around their four new transfer members. . . . The Phi
Kappa Sigma's went out to Earlewood Park, while the
Lambda Chi's and the Piker's shared Senator Hammond's.
. . . Doc Crawford's wvas the scene of the Sigma Nu get
together. . . The Kappa Sigs partied out at Sesqui.
Swimming and the trimmings were enjoyed by the Pi Kappa
Phi's and their dates at Adams' Pond. . . . The ATO's had
a grand time at Forest Lake.... From a hasty gander, the
SAE's had things pretty much their way at Mac Boyle's.
PIN UPS
Suppose you've noticed the SAE frat pin Doris Jones
is sporting? Yep, it's Charlie's! . . . While Lena Gilbert is
the proud owner of a Kappa Sigma sweetheart pin. Con
gratulations, Buck!
GOIN,G ONE BETTER
If you haven't noticed, please do, the third finger left
hand. belonging to our Editor Williams. . . Johnny Kil
patrick has given Willie Frances Summers a ring. How these
library romances will blossom! . . . Barbara Goode, ADPi,
is now Mrs. Charles Woothouse. He's stationed at the Co
lumbia Army Air Base. . . . Katherine McSwain became
Mrs. Ray Kelly June 9. ... Tri Delta's Barbara Keene was
married last Saturday to Captain Lee Meadows of the Air
Corps. . . . "Monkey" Oltrogge, KD, is taking the big step
in August. . . . The engagement of Ruth Sholk to Gus Arnold
of Columbia has been announced, as has Frances Owen's to
Henry Turner. ...
CHATTING
Seen crossing the campus in the last week were: Dottie
Taylor visiting her Delta Zeta sisters; Nell Mayer, Pi Phi,
dropped in for a short "Hello"; Kathleen Arthur of Union,
* S. C., paying a call on her old friends; Lt. (jg) Billy Mahon,
former USCer, renewing acquaintances; Spencer Meeks, a
4," too. was seen over in linn H all. Alice Marchant, Laura
Dowe and Betty McCreight have tales to tell about their
Pawlev's expedlition. It takes only one glance to spot those
who house-partied during vacation, the D)elta Zeta's, Kappa
Sig's and the Chi 0's. What gorgeous tans! The freckles,
I suppose, were a slip-up. Buck and Martha Morris (iVart ha
Hopkins) are the p)roudl parents of a seven and a halt' pound1
baby boy.
Recently elected officers of PiKA are: Ken Yost, p)resi
dent; D)ick. Hendley, vice-president ; Herb Everett, secre
tary ; Berny Groseclose, treasurer; H-oyt C'rider, German
,Club representative ; Bob Driessel, i nterfraternity r'epresen..
tative ; and F"rank Butler, pledgemaster.
-Buck Isom is the new prexy of Kappa Sig; Huston Crow;e,
G. P.; Moose Mueller, G. M. C.; Jerry Kilby, G. S.; and
Beach Gattman, G. T.
With a fervent sigh and a prayer, I hope i've (lone a pretty
good job as hostess of "Th' Corner."

YWCA-YMCA On
Hand to Greet
New Students
The campus took on new life Sun
day, July 1, when the freshmen
and transfers took their places as
students at Carolina. The YWCA
and YMCA immediately assumed
the role of welcoming committee
and greeted each girl and boy to
their new Alma Mater.
Members of the YWCA Cabinet
visited the freshman girls in Maxey
Sunday night endeavoring to calm
their fears of the approaching place
ment exams. The girls found them
selves doing their best to answer
such questions as "Where do we eat
tongibt ?" to "I want to take pre
med, what courses should I take?"
After Ihe first dreaded days
placement tests and registration
became a thing of the past.the YWCA
and YMCA joined hands and treat
ed the new students to a water
melon cutting Tuesday night In
Flinn Hall. The energetic ones were
found playing pool and dancing
while others who indulged in too
much watermelon sought the com
forts of the easy chairs on the lower
floor of Flinn.
The night ended with rousing
Carolina cheers, led by Jo Seidman,
putting everyone in the mood to
watch the Gamecocks conquer Clem
son this year.
Thursday night the fieshmen girls
were given a pajama party by the
Sophomore-Junior YWCA in Maxcy
lobby. The entertainment was im
promptu but brought out such hid
den talent as that of a new Caro
lina alun's, namely Anne Tison.
rendition of the "Cat and tihe Rat."
A freshman "Y" lunchoon is held
each Monday itt 1 p.m. in Flinn Hall.
and all freshmen, both girls and
boys, atre urged to come.
