Gamec( FROM WHERE I SIT By DENNIS POWERS Maybe some of you bright people noticed the new addition at the head of this column; congratulations, you have very good vision, and you will be awarded a gold button, as soon as the war is over. Anyway, some of you might remark that it was pilfered from some former sports writer of this illustrious paper, and you would be right, but poling among the ruins of the recently evacuated State Printing depart ment, I discovered this quaint bit of type, and it struck by *fancy in a way so I decided to add my by-line to it. Result, the murmurings of this brain will henceforth be read and regarded as the opinions of an innocent bystander, hence the name "From Where I Sit." BIRDS STOMPED BY GEORGIA SKYCRACKERS!! I imagine this would have been the headline in Sunday's paper in the town of Athens, Georgia, the home of the .Pre-Flight cadets, because that is exactly what happened on last Saturday's sunny afternoon. In all events, the Gamecocks did manage to stagger home with three firsts, and those were very, very close. It was almost as much of a walkaway as Navy, striving for her second straight inter collegiate crown, had against Duke on the same day. The scorep were pretty similar, but if the Birds ever met the Middies, the results would be even more embarrassing. The times turned in by the Birds against the Midshipmen from Annapolis-on-the-Severn were like the times of a High School against a College. A lot of work will have to be done by Doc Penny if he expects his boys to take another victory from the Hunter Field Fliers next Saturday in Savannah, Georgia. In fact, from here it looks like the Garnet and Black will droop just a trifle on the way back to Columbia, because they will be running on a 220 track, and a hand constructed, mud one at that. Pacing them selves will be diflicult after this 440 track at school, although, after running on this one, the condition of any track in he country shouldn't worry them at all. SIDE GLANCES AT BASEBALL Coach Johnny MacMillian unveiled the 1945 Gamecocks baseball squad to the public last Friday afternoon, and a fair crowd saw them bow to the soldiers from Columbia Army Air Base 6-2. This was not surprising, because thc odds were just a trifle on the soldiers' side, and Coach Mac says, "They looked a lot better than I expected." The Bird attack left something to be desired, gathering only four hits off of the CAAB pitcher; in fact, they looked something like the original Hitless WVonders!!! As for the coming series with Clemson in the Tigers' own lair this coming weekend, the coach would venture no prophecy. But the ('owdets seem to have even less on the ball than the Gamecocks, and the Birds should be able to take a pair of games, if Adams and Rudolph can find the plate, and the illustrious Xnobby Walsh, the Birds' superlative manager. doesn't, bring along all the bats with holes in them. DIGGING DIVOTS Thi doesn't seem to be as ola0Zfr a p)astimte ar.ound] this p)art of the country~ as (me would think. Even feeble 0old men can swing a golf club. but the response to calls for a University team this year has so far brought no response, outside of the, dozen-odd( Naval Tlrai nees. Maybe I am mis taken, but it seems that a few civilians on this campus could be potential stick wieldlers, but as yet none have comc forth. Let's get on the ball! SOFTBALL The Civilians have orga nizedl a soft ball league, and from the names they have chosen all of them seem to be lovers ot felines, at least they all end in ('AT. All the way from the formidable Bearcat, dlown to the lowly Alley Cat. On the Navy side of the campus the softball league is rapidlyv drawing to a close, antd the top four teams are p)re paring themselves for the big playoff to come. F"rom this corner, it looks like the Secondl Battalion will garner thre< out of the four covetedI places. Tleams 5, 7 and 8 are in 11 three--way tie for first, and shoulod go on to lace. The fourth: slot seems dlestined to be taken by the F"irst Battalion. They may slip team 1 or 2 into the p)hlyofTs, but team 2 fronm the Third Battalion is going strlonig. BADMINTON!!!I!!I I think that technically it is claissed as a sport, t hat' why it's in here. Personially I have my dIoubt)s, but who a I to dlisagree with the nmanagi ng ('(it or? Anyway, there i. a tou rnamient beinig plann jed. Withi the mni xed odoubles stuf1! that is floating aronndio it sounods more like a happyv hour Or a socmi get -toget her. Hut t here it is. Specialists Baker and O'Brien will venture no guess as to the outcome, and are even a lit tle hesitant in picking their favor ites. A three way tie for first place with another team only 1 game away is the situation at present writing. From the Second Battal lion teams 5, 7 and 8, are fighting for the top spot, and team 12 from the third battalion is in the fourth slot. Rising to fame during the current week, Willie P. Horton, laid aside the cares of his office of student body president, an(. took the initial steps toward the softball hall df fame. Winning four straight ball games, he is leading the mounds men (luring the current campaign. Ile is also leading the batters with a robust .533, but following close behind is Buddy Johnson, Chicago's gift to entertainment and feminine worlds, with .526. The next few weeks will see an end to the softball tourney, and then all eyes will be turned toward the field house for the boxing matches, to be conducted among battalions, and then the swimming pool to watch the second meet of the current semester. Track should be coming along somewhere some time soon, and all the boys who were not talented enough to make the University squad are working out, to get in sonie semblance of condition before the meet. SPECIAL DISCOU 12.31 Hampton Strae Page Five tvel Birds Tackle Tigers And Seek First Win On Clemson Diamond Fourteen Men to Make Trip to Hunter Field; Gunning for Second Win Carolina's representatives in the field of track and baseball will ven ture fr om home this coming week end. The Hitless Wonders of the diamond will tackle Clemson at Clemson, and the Harriers will at tempt to win another victory over the fliers of Hunter Field in Sa vannah, Georgia. In the diamond department, Coach Mac's boys will he gunning for their first victory of the new season. Clemson should not present too hard a foe for the Birds, but they could easily repeat the CAAB performance of last week. In the only game, so far this season, the Gamecocks have shown nothing to speak about. The hitting has been deplorable. and the succession of pitchers that paraded from the bench to the mound seem to have a lot of difficulty in finding the plate. "Tiger" Adams will probably get the starting call against the Tigers, and Tiger against Tiger should be interesting to watch, to say the least. Adams was the only pitcher on the Garnet and Black squad who did not show his wares to the few spectators last Friday afternoon. His ability is still pretty much of a secret, but he will be ready to go against Clemson, and rooters can judge for themselves. Clemson has not shown anything to speak of this season, and so far it has been pretty much of a bust as far as the supporters of the Ca dets have been concerned. Chuck Rudolph or Dick Dusenberry will probably get the starting call on Saturday. And if they settle down and pitch the hall they are cap able of and the Birds garner just a few base knocks, they should take two from Clemson. Bill Thrasher seems to he get ting his eye at last, and the out field should he well represented by Bob Tindall and Tommy Cox. Ray Maginn an(. "Foots" .ten kins are contributing some spark ling infield play, and Lyles and No ble take care of the catching de partment. l>oe Pennv has announced that he will take the following men with him on the trip this w\4eek-end: Spr int men Brernhs.
