Bernard Manning, '09A, who made his home in Spar tanburg before re-entering the Army to serve in the present war, is now on duty overseas with a quarter master group. Colonel Manning, who saw foreigh duty in the first World War, now has two sons in uniform, one with the Navy and one with the Army Air Corps. Mrs. Manning makes her home at 612 W. Chapel Hill street, Durham, N. C. 1920- 1929 Capt. Lewis Fulmer Koon, '290, originally of Ponaria, is serving as chaplain with the Fourth infantry division in Germany. A year to the day after joining the Fourth, Cap tain Koon made the D-Day landing in Normandy with the 12th regiment of that organization. The interior of a Siegfried line pillbox was used as the novel setting for religious services conducted by the chaplain on six occasions. Captain Koon once held several services in a single day in a building which later examina tions disclosed to have been thor oughly mined by the enemy. Cap tain Koon, formerly pastor of the Emmanuel-St. Matthews Lutheran Church at New Market, Ya., now wears the Purple Heart for wounds received in action. His wife and two sons make their home at New Market. Lieut. Joseph Gordon Shuler, '29C, and Mrs. Shuler (Shirley Le gare Bailey), '34C, of Cameron and Columbia, are now making their home at Twentyninc Palms, Calif.. while Lieutenant Shuler is attached to the Naval Auxiliary Air Station there. Maj. Joseph Eslie Hines, '27L, of Spartanburg, who commands a quartermaster battalion overseas, recently spent a leave in the States, but will return to his outfit. His home address is route three, Box 118, Spartanburg. T/5 Harold Horace Hentz, '27Ed, of Pomaria, is serving overseas with a field artillery unit. Before enter ing the service, Technician Heitz was instructor in modern languages and dean of boys at the Friends 'Academy, Locust Valley, N. Y. He is addressed through the Post master, New York, N. Y. 1930- 1939 Cpl. Caldwell Thomas Zimmer man, '34C, of St. Matthews, is on duty with a headquarters squardon overseas, and is addressed through the Postmaster, New York, N. Y. S/Sgt. Philip Winter, '37C, of Co lumbia, is serving with an infantry unit in the F.uropean theater, and is adldressed through the Postmaster, New York, N. Y. Mrs. Robert Downs Poindexter (Mary Alice Pendleton), '39J, form erly of Columbia, now makes her home at all Gladstone boulevard, Shreveport, La. Pvt. Samuel Evans Brown, '30A, formerly of Matthews, N. C., is nowy pastor of the First Presby terian Church, Danville, Ky. He is a graduate of the Union Theological Senminary, Richmond, Va., and1 re ceived the dlegree of dloctor of theol ogy from the Seminary in May, 1944. After studying at the Ulniver sity' of Edinburghi, Scotland, and at Westinmter College, Cambridge, F.ngland, Mr. Browni held pastorates at Columbia, Miss., and at Port Gibson, MI iss., going to Danville in 1941. He is married to the former Mdiss Janie Perrin Stevens, daughter of a missionary to China. They have two daughters, Mary Ellen, six, and Elizabeth Jane, two. Lieut. Comdr. William Woodrow Davis, USNR (CB), '37CE, of Flor ence, is addressed at the Bureau of Yards and Docks, Central Spare Parts Warehouse, Joliet, Ill., where he is executive officer. He served two years in the South Pacinic as executive officer and later as of ficer in charge of a Naval Construc tion battalion. He was promoted to his present rank in March, 1943, while on duty in the South Pacinic. Edith C. Pope, ARC, '39A, of Winnsboro, is stationed at Stark General Hospital, Charleston. From there she rides hospital trains to other Army hospitals in the United States. Lieuten ant Dieter spent a leave in Colums bia in January, following 25 months of sea duty aboard a destroyer. His ship took part in the invasion of the Aleutians, and in landings in New Guinea, the Bisnmark Archipelago, and finally in the Philippines at Leytc.
