Ethel La In Desperate Nee Success Story In A president of a University hatt many duties, but Norman Smith, President of the University of South Carolina, had a new one ..dcd to his list recently. And it all began with a holdup in the mail. The Carolina co-ed was prepar ing to go out of town for the week end, but since it was the end of the mionthi, she was having a little fitlancial trouble, as is usual, or should we say habitual? Frantically she called her mother long dis tance, collect, of course. "Go over to the 'postotfice, dear," said her mother. "I sent you some mtouey ye terday." The relievel co-ed dashed out of the lurtitury, leaving two or three scattered rooi-nmtvs in her wake, and headed for the basement head gtiarters of the 1 ostoffice in Mlaxey. iL her box was bare, even after she had twiirled the dial and looked in to make stre. Alas, it was sat urday noon, and no mail is put up after that time. Our co-cds aie a resourceful lot, however. and the girl headed to wards DeSaussure, hoping to per sualc the Treasurer's office to cash a check on her long-suffering fatily. 'he line outside was long. and she plumped down into a chair to wait her turn; ready to tell her troubles to any sympathetic listener. Behind her she heard a door open and she paused in her muttering long enough to see a man in civilian clothes standing there. He did seem to be interested. for he asked. "Is there anything I can do for you?" 1turridly the co-ed outlined her woes, explaini;n that she had to go away for the weekend and was absolutely without money. "Why don't you horrow from some of your friends?" asked her alistener. "Brother, you don't know my tiends; they are always broke," re plied the girl. "Perhaps we can find something else," he replied, smiling a little. "What have you planned to do?" "I though that the Treasurer's office would cash a check; that is, one on my father." "Who is your father," he quired, and when she replied, said, "Weil, I don't know him, but-" "Oh, w%ould you-," began the co ed, unconsciously glancing at the door behind her. D. C. These bones are from .fossils disinttered at Cutno Bluffs, Wyo., which has sup plied muscums all over the United States with ancient fossils. The largest bone in the collection is a humerus, or upperuost bone of the forearm. of a dinosaur that w%alked on its hind legs. This hone w%cighs about yo pounds. The dinosaur which the bone was a part of mil lions of years ago was one of the nedium sized ones. Fossils of dino saurs that have bcen exhtned shop, that these extinct animals ranged in site from that of a chicken to five times the size of an elephant. Theer has been much speculation on why these enormous animals be came extinct. One theory is that the small namunals tthat were coming into existence at that time fed on the dinosaur eggs; thus, the dinosaurs became extinct. However, Dr. L. L. Smith. geology professor. states that the most logical reason for their ex tinction is that it was due to changes in climatic conditions b0 million years ago. Dinosaurs belong to the reptile group that is extinct now except for snakes, which arc crawling reptiles. Vears ago most of the reptiles were wt alking animals. In the geology department are two fossils of ichtyosaurs, or swimming dinosaurs, which were brought to the university from Germany by the president of the university. Thomas Cooper. Other dinosaurs of the an cient ages had wings of a 25 feet span and they flcw about the country. One of the most curious things about these extinct reptiles is that many of them were strict vegetarians. Regardless of their enormous size. the dinosaurs had a brain only one fortieth the size of a human being's brain. door. "Excuse me," she said, "and thank you just the same." The University has helped finance this series of speakers and has tried to encourage student attendance by purchasing 200 tickets for each lec ture and gave these to students fre+. The students have not taken advan tage of these free tickets. At the last i lecture, given by H. R. Knicker hocker, well known comrnent#tor. the student attendance was extrenie l low. The iumber of students attend ing the Maurice Hindus lecture will he the deciding factor on whether or not the Unii ersity will buy ,ny niore student tickets in the future. UHS Dining Room May Close' April 1 Student Patronage Not Sufficient To Keep Open The C~niversity high school dining routn. at the L'niversity of South Carolina is operating on a one month at a time lasis.
