SPORTSCOPE
By DENNIS POWERS
It. is with deepest regrets that I inform the many (?) read
ers of this section of the Gamecock. that. Buck Cureton, a darn
good buddy of mine, and until now the guiding hand behind
these epic lines written semli-month ly. hats left, t'SC for USC.
1De is finishing his pursuit of a diploma at the ITniversity of
Sotithern California. So from now on all pitifil lines written
will come front my feeble brain.
Glancce at the l?o.ringi Matchers.
Anyone visiting the Ficlh House last. Friday nite saw a darn
good smoker. with only one or two exceptions. The fights as a
whole were well pit on. scrappy. and Fritz 'T'urner. the third
man in the ring officiated aly. ")oc" Crawford, ..n(1 Special
ist O'llrien. called the fights as thev saw them. This corner
saw i couple of them at little di fferent ly however. I am no ex
pert ont boxing. and I cast no reflection on the judges. the ref
eree, or the bovs in the ring. Bit in the words of Walter
W inchell, "I rep ort, the news as I see it."
''he I iediiiont-i Ellison scrap that started the evenings festi
vities was it sweet fight. Piedmont leading all the war. and
lIlison gamtlely battling a superior opponent. The Smith-111rk
hardt brawl showed only, i heavier. mnor"e experienced man
against it guy that wouldn't giiit. and several times during the
fight I)oig was in pretty hot water. The Lyles-l-lewell comhi
nation showed the fans three rouindb of sweet fighting and
witn't. in douht after the first roind. I-lewell's inexperience
began to show and Lyles coasted to an easy wini. In th te iones
Sialliv an fiasco thle jmilges erred. in my opiniionl for the firist
time. Siullivan. at rugged aggressive fighter carried tle scral to
dlones all evenling witiniig the first two rounds on points. and
slMlking Jones wit Ii several hard pinches. Starting the third
witI a lot of speed he finished rather poorly. and the deeiion
went to dlones-Whv? REASON UNKNOWN.
Int one of the better fights of the evening Glider Brown. and
'on Kinney sli gged for three rounds that kept everyone on
0 the edge of his sent. Kiinnev tiissed too Imiany puticlhes. and
Brown copped the decision. But it was close. 'The big boys lum
heredl otut next. ind 1-.th of at ton of heef in the persons of
Doc Couch and Budldy Riggs slanIiat1e<I each other for at while.
It was a game voangster algainst it more experienced opponent.
amI Couch won going away. The rafters in the Field Ilouse
)robably still catry the scent of this next decision. DIusenbxerry
Sait. Saul kept a slightly bewildered opp onent at the end of
Iiis gloves for two rounds. In the 3rd Dick woke u1p anaid bega n
ashg a potent left. However one round is no fight. and from
here it looked like a slight ease of ,Jesse ,1amanes..in the last fight
of the evening tlie master showman "locky Brown proceeded
to handeiiif an inexperienced by thoroughly willing .Joht1nny
Kilpatrick. It was at beautifil exhibition. with the veteran
Brown taking the decision hands down.

Niuiber two is the doubtful one.
\Vhile it is entirely within the realm
of possibility that the Navy would
turn soit hearted and allow the boys
a couple of extra days, the probable

primary dttty. etc. etc. If the Navy
should see its way clear to do this,
it would be a grand opportunity for
the boys who have really worked
hard to give this I 'niversity one of
it, fiest ba'ketball teams. Playing
in the world-famous garden itself is
an experience that they would not
soon forget, and something for this
school to shout about. The teams
they would meet would be some
thing else again. The cream of the
nation hall teams are invited to
play, and the games themselves
would be worth traveling far to see.
But here's hoping that they make
the grade in all respects, and if so,
our heit \ ishes travel with them.
