SPORT SCOPE
By DENNIS POWERS
Taking time out at the start of this so-called column to re
hash a, few old football scores we have-TWO IRON MEN
FROM THE STEEL COUNTRY.
Hailing from the region of this land noted for its steel pro
duction and distribution, Carolina has two sons. Both have
been 'erv instrumental in some of the fine Carolina football
teams. .Joe Patrone in his hey-day at this Institution earned by
his superlative play, and endurance the name of Iron-Man Joe.
The sparkplug and mainstay of this season's Gamecocks was
highlights of the '44 season. and he was the only regular to
start all eight hall games this year. We salute the latest addi
tion to the stamina family Iron-Man Tony Patrone.
i"ldell's Lead is Menaced
On the recent trip to North Carolina taken by the basketball
team, Curli's place as the nan of the hour was seriously
threatened by Charlie Sokol. Hlis last minute shot that won the
second thrilling victory over the White Phantoms caused many
a ferninine heart to flutter. and t(lie entire s<lpoad reported that
I many a winsome lass from the 'Tarheel country tripped uip to
themli and asked breathlessly. "Which one is Charlie?' (Note
pictuire) "Is that Charlie Sokol over there?'' On the return
trip, however, the sinister brain of McMnilaway hatched a plot
to put Curly" back in top place. IIaving the good fort ine to be
sitting by a cute co-ed from A1pplachain State Teachiers Col
lege. Sonnv lost no time in declaring the merits of his fellow
hall player. The co-ed took it all in rather big eyed. then wvalk
ing iup to where Kuldell was sitting lost in. his thoughts. she
turned on a dazzling smile and rather breathlessly asked. 'Will
.you please sign my scrap book?''

The high-flvinrg conference le:aling Gamnnecocks 1hat-ketl all

they have lost buit one game aind that was a tnon-schedu led :f

Jackson. They have layed seven college giales and hiave I won
seven col lege gatles.
Twice tlhey have defeated the White P'hantois from North
Carolina tp in the Ta1-rheel country. The second was really a
jam-up affair with fair-haired Charlie Sokol making the Inst
second shot thlt, won the garte for Carolina 41-40. ( Ieference
