JUST TO KEEP THE
RECORD 'STRAIGHT
A headline on the front page of The Gamecock this week
reading "Students, Alulniii Oppose Proposal To Move USC"
may be misleading to some alumni readers.
The Alumni Council, the governing body Qf the Alumni As
sociation, has taken no action on the proposal to move and
expand the University.
It is to the credit of the Alumni officers that, so far a
is known here, not a single member of the Alumni Council
has nade a public statement about the proposal-except the
president of the Alumni Association, who when approachet
by the press, said simply that. it would be necessary for him t<
study the plan carefully before he would make a statement
on the proposal.
"On The Alumni Front" congratulates and comiends the
Alumni President on his statement. As president of the organ
ized alumni of Carolina, he has a definite responsibility, and
cannot afford to issue -hasty or careless statements which con
cern the welfare of Alma Mater.
The proposal to move and expand the University has at
t.racted much attention, created much interest. The attentior
of the people of South Carolina is centered on the University
and its needs now as never before in a generation.
But it is too earl to interpret accurately and fully alumi
.opinion concerning the proposal. Alumni generally seem to be
following th^ lead of the Alumni President and the Alumn
Council in keeping their feet on the ground, pending oppor
t.unity to study the proposal from every angle before nmaling
up- their minds, or issuing statements, concerning it.
The Alumni Office has heard from Inore th:n i a thousant
alumni since a majority of the members of the board of trustee
went on record as favoring the proposal. It has on its regula:
mailing list more than ten thousand olditional ainimii who n1ov%
are scattered all over the world and who have not vet. beel
heard from concerning the move.
"On The Alunmti Front , with all of its vast network of inorc
thai (0.00 records and all of its contacts which now reach
literally to the foir <-orners of the carth andl stretch over ar
iileterninnble nuimber of years of time, cannot yet begii t<

One thing is certain --Carolina alunmiii today are in favoi
of a bigger andi better Iniversitv. An<d that means expansion
