.Birds Grap ?/ranL Opinioni By FRANK GRIFFIN, JR. GAMtECOCKS STOPPED CLEMSON BOWL BID-'41 irother, when Carolina meets CIeleson on Big Thursday, aty thing and we mean anything canl happen. For example in 1941 -when Clemson catme to the Fair Classic with it bowl bid tag tied to their tail after beating P.C.. V.M.I.. N.C. State, and upsetting Boston College, the Birds took matters into their own hands and neatly snipped the string that. tied the howl bid to the Tiger's tail by i score of 18-141. liotlh sides went wild as Clemson, trail ing in the last. quarter, drove down to the Oamecock 18 yard line in the last. two iniutttes of play. With a first down on the Game co'k 23, they drove into the Bird line with all that they had, but in the four downs only picked up six yards. As the ball went over. the Birds began another scoring drive picking up an easy first down, and some say that if the ball game had been five min utes longer, we would have scored again. 'Then too, there was last year and who could think of a better 0 exanple? For the first half, the Gamecocks moved sluggishly, fumbled and pulled every other kind of football boner. As a re stilt. the Tigers capitalized and at the half lead in the ball game 6 to 0. Bit thet, the Hirds came back, its feathers ruffled by the sneak Io-in'hlown that had been pulled on them in the first half, and a little peeved because they, the top-heavy favorites were trailing to a teatn that wasn't supposed to havo tanything. So in that second halt'. they cotmpletely exhonerated themselves for their performtance in the first half by racking up 33 points and turning the ball game into the proverbial track-meet. "Whether or not Clemson had a good ball team is yet to be r proven to me. 'I'hey have fought a good game on paper and their press releases build them up as only the pre-war Tigers were boosted. Their total of 47 points sCoredl in three games have been scored by Bill Rogers 18. Watt Stewart 12, Sid Tinsley 12, Jack Miller -. and Mlavis Cagle 1. Both teams have enierged from defeat at the hands of powerful elevens still intact. The Gamecocks have won one game, lost one, and tied one while the Tigers have copped two and lost one. The ag gregations are light with the ma jority of reserves inexperienced but each team will muster all their strength for this one contest in an effort to seize their most important game of the year. Clemson seized their opener in a powerful display of might with their victory over the P. C. Blie Iose :14 to 0. The tables were turned in their second encount; however, and the high-flying Georgia Tech Yellowjackets overwhelmed the Bengals in a big way copping the contest by a 51 to 0 score. The Tigers proved they were still in the running with a 13 to 7 win over the hardy N. C. State eleven. Though the Tigers margin of loss to Tech seemed to deflate high hope for Clemson their showing against the N. C. State team was characteristic of the comeback Tigers.
