TO THE SPORTS EDITOR OF THE GAMECOCK:
I am a V-12 student here at Carolina. I, like many of those
in the V-12, did not choose this school, but was sent here. This
fact has naturally dampened the Carolina school spirit among
us.
One factor, however, has boosted the Carolina spirit among
us V-12' more than anything else. That is the football team.
The team is mainly composed of navy men, and that means
a lot. It is the one part of Carolina in which we take the most
interest and pride.
We are a part of that team; and since that team has always
been an integral part of Carolina life, we have come to consider
ourselves a real and important part of Carolina.
Although others may differ with me on this statement, I say
for myself that. Carolina has a DAMN good team.
-An only molus
I don't kntow the ntamie of the person who wrote the above
letter, but I'd like to shake his hand. He's hit the nail right on
the head.
Yes, Carolina has a "dainm good team'' and as for school
spirit, that's not in our department, but we will say this. If
anybody stays here long enough, the SPIRIT's bound to hit, 'em.

Much interest and controversy prevails over the six rule
changes by 1 he Eastern Intercollegiate Association and many
conferences throughout the countttry are following the example.
Up to this writing, however, the Southern Conference has taken
no action on the matter and it is doubtftl if they will.
The changes tle l:. I. F. A. made are:
1. Prohibit out-of-bounds kickoffs by penalizing the kicking
team five yards itntil a legal kick is tmade.
2. Permit tse of a one-inchi artificial tee for tle kiekoff.
:l. L,essen severity of penaltie.s for illegal ft,rward passing
when madc beyond the liiie of scrinttage or when made by
team which did not putt hall in play.
4. Clarify the otfside rifle.
5. Permit all fumbhles to be advanced by opponents.
ti. Permit passing aniywhere behind the line of st"rinutnage.
If these change's a re approved inl t' Soitithert Coinference.
they will encourage passing. Coach Newtc,tt has expressed his
approval (if the changes it' they are made in the Southern Con
ference.
These clanges are not no0W in football. The pros use these
rules and in many southern high schools sonic of these rules
have been used successfully. .If action is taken in the Southern
Conference, the fans will probably see a radical type of foot
ball, possibly a little bit wild and undoubtedly quite exciting.

FINALE
As the suinme'r football practice closes the outlook on the
coming season becomes somewhat rosier. The fact rentains, how
ever, that the imajority of the squad is somewhat inexperienced
and no prediction on the tuture is wise as it is still early in the
season. But Coach Newton in his first year here, is loing a
w,onderful job in whipping the boys hito shape. Whatever the

The Gamecock eleven ended sum

with a heavy scrimmage at the
stadium under the camera. Regular
practice will begin September 4th
in preparation for the opener with
Newberrv, September 7th.
Although the team met with such
handicaps as conflicting lat." classes
and the grueling heat, Coach New
ton said the practice was satitac
tory. The hoyz are putting spirit in
their workouts and are making up
for their disadvantage in weiglit and
experience by preserving the good
old fighting spirit.
Though mot,t of the candidates
are green and inexperienced Coach
Newton will place one strong team
afield. Reserves remain a problem
btit it is still hoped that thi. draw
hack can be ironed out- before the
opener.
Some holes in the line h;ave been
filled. Pat 'fhrash, star end, and
Skimp Harrison, recently reinau
gurated on the Bird's roster are
counted upon to do the brunt of
the pass receiving. Phil \\arren and
Ralph Hodges, hefty tackles. Toni

center dominate those positions.
.\ change has been made in the
backfield. Brick Bradford has been
shifted to hold down the blocking
back post. Jim Hu nnicultt racy scat

The following was uncovered in

I became interested one day while
watchmng a scrimmage session being
put in p:av, and all of a sudden I
heard the f-nniest w urcs. one of the
p:aver's shouted to one of his mates,
"Alalaia". then there w as a big pile
of men all pilei up as if someone
had put them there. Soon another
player called ''Oski-wow-w ow" and
the ball changed over.
Such language aroused my curios
ity so I went to Coach Newton and
asked him why these words were
used, and he said that they are code
words and are as secret as the plays.
I then went to the library and found
that "Alababa" was the leader of the
forty thieves. Now how would this
apply to football ? They couldn't steal
the game because there are four of
ficials watching them.
Then "Oski-wow-wow."
There are other words used such
as "The Sally Rand", the reason they
call it that is because it is a naked re
verse.
All these words are familiar to the
players, but they do not give out any
information, therefore we will just
have to decode them as the plays de
velop.
