Corsairs Blow
Into USC Scene
The adage that music is the staff
of happiness was declared proved by
the audience at last Friday night's
Happy Hour when Al Hancock's all
navy Corsairs entertained the gather
ing with an hour of jive. The seven
man orchestra ranged from the sweet
and slow to hepped tip swing and
beat-'em-up boogic; with the gather
ing registering their solid approval
of each number
Al Hancock, a musician from way
back organized the Corsairs when he
arrived at this Universit;" July first.
Hancock began his career as a musi
cian at the age of eight and had his
own hand at fifteen. Since that time
he has been playing the bass fiddle
for several orchestras; the last of
which was Freddy Johnson's orches
tra from the University of North
Carolina.
Among the other members of the
group arc Fred Verner, drummer de
luxe ^hose association with Hancock
goes back several years when they
both played in an orchestra in the
lower end of this state. Verner is a
veteran of a year's duty on the U.S.S.
Bunkerhill which has played a prom
inent part in all the offensive action
in the South Pacific area. He arrived
at the University July first.
Erwin Gremli plays the claronet.
He has years of experience that ac
counts for his fine playing. At one
time he had a hand of his own and
was actively associated with the band
of the Ringling Brothers' circus.
'Shorty' Skinner is the Sax player.
Ile has played with Reeves llesterlee
and his orchestra until that organiza
tion was broken up by the call of
Uncle Sam.
Other members of the outfit are
-Bob Doyle, who can really give out
on the trumpet; Hank Beehe whose
piano hoogie belongs with the best ;
and Jerry Meachem, vocalist and co
organizer of the group. Meachem is
an experienced Nocalist, having been
with Tex Beneke's hand after he left
Glenn Aliller. Al I lancock assists in
the vocalizing.
D. E. Carter and Tony Paradiso
handle the bnsiness arrangements for
the orchestra.
Babcock Returns!
