C. Rice Estes, 'ISA, formerly alumni 'secretary of Pratt Institute, New York, is now connected with the Columbia University Library, and is teaching one class in Library Science at Pratt. He is addressed at 344 West 72 street, New York, $3, N. Y. Ralph E. Bradford, Sr., '38A, was recently promoted to the rank of staff sergeant in the ground forces of the Air Corps in England. Sergeant Bradford volunteered in March, 1943, and received training at Colorado Spring, Colo., and Salt Lake City, Utah, before being sent overseas. Edwin F. (Bully) Farr, '29C, '31L, of 4021 Kenilworth road, Columbia, was recently sworn into the Marine corps as a second lieutenant. He will receive his training at Quantico, Va., and will be assigned as special ist in the ground forces of the Ma rine Air Corps. Lt. Comdr. I'on L. Weston, '29A, of Columbia, who is now serving with the medical department of the Naval Reserve, was one of the doc tors who handled the first aid work during the first two days of the in vasion of Saipan. 1930-1939 Margaret H. Gregg, WAVES, '31G, of Rock Hill, who has been serving on the staff of Instruction at Northhampton in the WAVES Naval Reserve Midshipman's School since May, 1943, is now on duty in Washington. Ensign Gregg has written a textbook on naval corres pondence which is now being used in all the Navy training schools. She is connected with the Bureau of Naval Ordnance in Washington. Howard W. Williams, '39A, has been promoted to the rank of lieu tenant colonel at Stuttgart Army Air Field, Ark., where he is director of training. Mrs. Williams (Sara Harrison), '39A, is with Colonel Williams. H. Gordon Kenna, Jr., '36A, was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant senior grade in the Navy. He is on duty in Charleston with the Sixth Naval District. Jack Peele, Jr., '36CE, USMCR, of Columbia was recently promoted to the rank of major. He is serving with the Marines in the Pacific area. Edith Pope, '39A, of Winnsboro, has been with the American Red Cross for about eight months, and is now on duty at the New Orleans Naval hospital, La. It. Carrington B. Hoefer, '34C, of Columbia is now on duty with the Navy in England. Lieutenant Hoefer was commissioned in April, 1942, and served at the Charleston Navy Yard for nearly a year. He then served at Norfolk, Va., and at Camp Allen, Va., before going over seas. - Lt. Elis W. Masters, '35A, of Co lunmbia is now serving with a gen eral hospital unit overseas. Lieu tenant Masters is addressed through the postmaster in New York City. Pvt. Herbert T. Surrency, '39C, writes that he is with a field artillery battalion in France. Keels, '31A, of Lynch burg, has recently been promoted from captain to major in the med Ical corps in Greenland, where he is post surgeon at a base hospital. McKelvey, Jr., '40E, of Charleston, was recently awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross for his work in connection with night photo reconnaisance missions. Miss LaRoche has bern teaching in Charleston for the past two years. She reported at Camp Lejeune, New River, N. C. June 14 for a six weeks' indoctrination course. John S. Holland, '43A, of Ninety Six has been commissioned a second lieutenant and pilot in the Army Air Corps at Marianna, Fla. Lt. B. M. Ellison, Jr., '44A, of Lancaster, pilot of a Liberator bomber based in England, has been awarded the Air Medal. Harry 8. Duval, '43C, of Colum bia recently won his wings at Lub bock Field, Trexas. Flight Officer Duval has been home on leave, and has now returned to Lubbock Field, Texas. James C. Turner, Jr., '44C, of Columbia has been graduated from the Bombardier's school at Midland Army Air Field, Midland, Texas. Lieutenant Turner is now stationed at Lincoln Army Air Field, Lincoln, Neb. Kenneth Irving Mets, '44E, of Colambia was recently commis sioned a second lieutenant in the Army Air Corps at Brooks Field, Texas. Mrs. Major, now an ensign in the WAVEs, reported for training at Northampton, Mass. May 8, 1943. After receiving her commission as ensign, she was selected to attend the Navy Supply Corps School, Har vard University (Radcliffe Branch), where she completed the general course in September, 1943. In October, 1943, she reported to her present station at the Naval Purchasing Office, 315 Montgomery street, San Francisco, Calif. Porter, '40A, of Zolumbia is assistant operations of icer of the AAF Materiel Comi nand at Wright Field, Ohio. He sntered the Air Forces in 1941, and ifter receiving his conmmission, was assigned to the flight teot section at Wright Field. In addition to his Luties as assistant operations officer, Captain Porter served also as an aircraft investigation officer. Sgt. Francis C. Bryant, '41L, of Drangeburg, has recently returned to the States after having served in the communications branch of the army for two years. He has been in the European and Mediterranean theatres. Lt. Donald Lyles, '44C, of Winns boro, was recently awarded the Air Medal and one Oak Leaf cluster. H-e is a b)ombardier on a Flying Fortress based in England. Cap tain Bowmani, who has been over seas about a year, and has partici pated in twenty-six missions, is lead bombardier in his group, Hie and his group led the first wave of bombers over the English channel em Invasion Day. E. Russell Edwards, Jr., '42A, of Columbia, was recently commis sioned an ensign in the Naval Air Corps. He received his commission at Corpus Christi, Texas, and has completed his fighter training at Charleston, R. I. Ens. William M. (Bill) Bray, '49A, '4'IEE, of Colut=hia, recently won his air crewman wings at Fort Lauderdale, Fla. Ensign Bray Is now on active duty with the Navy in the Atlantic a.... i -Jronf lumni Association MIumni Editor Johnston Wins Senate Seat Gov. Olin D. Johnston, '230, '24L, won the United States senate nomination over his four opponents in the only statewide race in Tues day's Democratic, primary. With returns practically complete, John ston had 126,861 votes, a majority of 20-odd thousand over the four other candidates. Dr. Carl B. Epps, '03, of Sumter, the only other University graduate in the race, and the father of Lieut. Carl B. Epps, Jr., '40A (who is now with the Marines in the Pa- 1 cific theatre) was in fourth place with 7,237 votes. Other totals were: Ellison D. (Cotton Ed) Smith, '86, incumbent and dean of the senate (who re ceived his degree from Wofford College, but attended the University from 1884 to 1880), 81,483; John M. Daniel, South Carolina attorney general, 13,147; Augustus S. Mer rimon, Sumter attorney, 2,551. The two incumbent solicitors who had opposition, Sam R. Watt, '25L, of Spartanburg and Jeff D. Griffith, '15L, of Saluda, both alumni of the University law school, appeared to be renominated. Incomplete returns from over the state indicated that other Carplina alumni who were candidates for of fice fared well at the hands of the voters. With the election of Governor Johnston to the senate, Lieut. Gov. Ransome J. Williams will be ele vated to the governorship. When Mr. Johnston takes his seat in the senate in January, 1945, Mr. Wil liams will succeed to the office of chief executive for the unexpired term of two years. Lonnie E. Garrick, Jr., '40E, of Columbia, was recently promoted to the rank of lieutenant senior grade in the Naval Reserve. Lieutenant Garrick entered the Navy in May, 1942, and is now on duty at the naval torpedo station, Newport, R. 1. Lt. (jg) Jack D. Fuller, '43C, of Columbia has recently returned to the States on leave after having been overseas since early in 1943. He served on Landing Craft-Tanks, and took part in the occupation of Tunisia, the Sicilian invasion, and the invasion at Salerno. Lieutenant Fuller was in the first wave of ships to reach the coast of Normandy on D-day. Lt. Robert E. Brannon, '41A, is with a quartermaster service com pany in Italy. Wade C. Parler, '42A, who is with an army supply dlivis ion. E. M. (Zip) Hanna, '42J, recently resigned his position as physical education director of the Columbia Y.M.C.A., to volunteer for the United States Navy. Mr. Hanna played football as a student at Carolina, and later coached Olym pia High School to a state football championship. He will be addressed at 305 Church street, Huntsville, Ala., until he is called to active duty. William D. Dworkin, '40P, for merly stationed at Fort Devens, Mass., is now overseas with a geni cral hospital nnit. He was recently promoted to the rank of captain. James W.
