DEADLINE
BY CHARLIE SANDERS
HOORAY FOR EVERYBODY!!!
Team four fought their way through the civilian softball
tourney and came out. the winner. They worked hard and to
them goes a lot of credit.
But a lot more credit, is due the tennis that. also fought hard
and helped put over the tournament, but still didn't, come out
on top. Team seven, especially, seemed to be the hard luck
bunch. Those boys were really good. and it. was hard for them
- to. swallow the last-defeat handed them by four.
Orchids, sodas on the house, etc. for everybody that partici
pated in the action on Davis Field every Monday through
Thursd'ay for the last few months. That's what put over the
tournament and brought you boys before the campus.
The intramural council can chalk ip one victory and put an
other feather in its cap. So far the boys have managed to buck
the traditional bugaboo. Its not quite traditional, maybe, but
it's been here to some extent, for a long time. You know to what
I refer. The council wants the intramural sports program to be
Mopen to all imen on the campus. Let's be democratic. The small
fellow who isn't so good wants to play, too ! The council pro
moted this central idea in the tourney that has just finished.
Congratulations to the men of Carolina for showing an interest
in their school and working for it !
NAVY VS. CIVILIAN
The civilian all-star, 17 of the best men who participated iii
the aforementioned intramural softball tourney, will meet the
best softball team the Navy affords on June 12, 13, and 14th.
The affair will lie a red-hot slugfest, and that isn't scuttlebutt
mate.
- Ensign Klocker will fieldit a team chosen from the best of
the teams which recently participated in the Navy intramurals.
The Navy has a first and secopd string the rank of which is
egligible. Both teams are equally good, the Ensign has ad
tnittetl and we can guess that both are plenty good.
This series will top off the softball season at the University
and should wind up the two tourneys in great style.
THE COACH
Many thanks to Mr. Banjo Smith, of the Columbia Record,
for the splendid picture of Coach Newton that is appearing in
this issue of the Gamecock. It, is the best that we've been able to
get our hands on.
Coadh Newton is at the U'tniversity now, at, work lining up the
various and sundry details of the grid season and getting every
thing in order.
