DEADLINE

* BRIGHT PROSPECTS
Now that Doe Newton has accepted the post of head football
coach at Carolina, prospects for a team nest fall are brighter
than ever. It's too early now to know who will play. Most of
last season's bright stars have either left already or will have
a left by October, but the slmmer drills may show up some new
talent. The sehedule is shaping up well, Athletic Director Can
non announced. but its not ready for release yet.
Many thanlks from grateful gamecock fans go to Lt. Moran
and his staff that turned out the great '43 squad.

It is pretty general knowledge now that sports writers and
their readers, the fans, have a special language all their own.
What few people do know is that it all got started way back
in 1877 with Thomas A. Dorgan, a sports reporter in San Fran
cisco. This same man became famous for his lingo. It was he,
who signed his name as TAD, his three initials, who fif'st called
shoes dogs, and a straw hat a skimmer. Stingy people were
nickle nursers to limt. His most famous meaningless expres
sions are yes, we have no bananas, and he's all wet.
, Now its just general sportstalk to a fan to speak of a basket
ball as a casaba, or to go crazy when the cagers turn on the
fireworks and drop in a hooper. Curly is the universal nick
ntame of all golfers. In a friendly card game Hart, Schaffner,
and Marx are the three jacks. The Tennis team are netmen, of
course, and at stanza is a regular division in any athletic contest.
Those are only a few of which there are thousands. Many old
falns can even carry on a complete conversation without letting
the novice inl on a single point.
If the old gentleman in the bleachers yells, "Okay, .Johnny
boy, pile into the old pill and park it iu the bushes", he merely
wishes the mlana at hat to knock the ball out of the park.
It's really quite fascinating stuff once you get on the bhil
witIt it' So when you get wind of a guy who is patroling the
ast.tre, he hasnt lost his mind, but is simply playing the out
COMING UP-GOOD SOFTBALL
There's been lots of action in some of the intramural contests
that started last week and some plenty good ball players are
showing ip here and there. So-A little world series of softball
games between Carolina naval and civilian students will be
played at the termination of the intramurals now in progress.
The teams will be made up of the stars of the intramural
tonrney.
If you're one of those people who likes red hot softbalL, and
who doesn't, this is your ticket. Dates for the contest Will be
announced later.

squadron of the 15th Army Air
Force two former gridiron stars of
these two colleges are carrying the
ball for . Uncle Sam on the same
team.
Back in 1940 and 1941 second lieu
tenant Kenneth 0. Couch, of RFD 3,
Easley, S. C., was a tackle on the
Clemson eleven, playing opposite Cpl.
James 11. Conan, a guard at the
Unrivcrsity of South Carolina. Now
the lieutenant is a bombardier on one
of the 13-24 Liberators of the same
group that Cpl. Cuman is directing
in physical training somrewhere in
Italv.
Thc two teams broke even over
those tw%o years, Clemson winning
19-13 in 1940 and South Carolina 18
13 ill 1941. When the two meet on
the field their conversation almost al
ways drifts back to their football
days and how their teamrs would
have fared "if .. ."
Lt. Couch graduated in 19.1 and
entered the Air Corps in October the
same year. Cpl. Coian, who lis es at
24 1.ongciew Road, Asheille, N. C.,
won all-state recogniti<on in I ligh
School and still had one vear of col
lege fouotlall left when lie was
drafted and sent to physical training
instructor's school at Miami Beach,
Fla.
