McDonald, Pilol
Event", Visits C
Speaks In All Girl
History-Making Fei
Capt. Olin McDonald, Carolina
alumnus from Bishopville, returned
not long ago from two years of homh
ing Europe. After an interview with
a Babcock all-girl English class and
and A.P. photographer with a no-good
camera, he probably wished he were
back in his history-making liberator
bomber, the "Blasted Event."
Flanked by his wife. Anne, and his
former teacher, Babcock, Olin posed
as the camera clicked fruitlessly and
the girls gaped at his decorations. Olin
has received the Distinguished Flying
Cross and cluster, the Presidential
Citation and the Air Medal with three
clusters. The Distinguished Flying
Cross and Presidential Citation were
awarded for his participation in the
bombing raid over the Rumanian Oil
Fields. Olin led a group of big bomb
ers on this raid. Speaking of the raid.
lie said that in order to get below the
anti-aircraft fire some planes scraped
the ground, and that it was impos
sible to get too high to see the flames
from the field-.
Olin has taken part in 25 major
bombing missions and countless minor
ones. He has shot down an even dozen
Nazis. lie planned the raids over
Berlin, and. has hombed every Nazi
held country in Europe. 1ie served on
submarine patrol for a year.
Between camera clicks. Olin com
mented oii everything from secret
weapons to English cigarettes-and
English girls. Speaking of the pleas
ant side of bombing, Olin stated the
Rmnania was the prettiest country
over which he had flown, and that
the Mediterranean water was so ci4ar
that fish could be seen from 3.0" ft.
in the air.
On the grimmer side. Olin told cf
the time when his and another bomber
turned back over Austria to help four
disabled planes, and saved them.
Although he has never been wounded.
Olin had a narrow escape when flack
hit a window lie was looking out of
over Germany.
Olin's "Blasted Event," has dropped
about 175 thousand lbs. of bombs.
Lowell Thomas made a movie short
about the bomber not long ago.
S\'hen at Carolina, Ol1n was captaii
of the boxing team and southern con
ference bantam weir;ht champion for
two years. He met his wife wher
they were both students at the Uni
versity,
