Literary Societies
Promote IlIl Will
Monday, March, 25, r944, the four
literary societies held a joint meet
ing in the University chapel. The
purpose of the meeting was to pro
mote ill-will among the societies.
The, meeting opened with a brief
debate on "Campus Courting," with
Mrs. Hawkins of the English de
partment taking the affirmative and
some drip from the biology depart
ment, the negative. The affirmative,
naturally won the debate.
After the debate, Buchanan Mc
Kay gave his recitation of "Lettie
the Pure White Leghorn." When
the audience recovered, they were
thrilled by Mr. Furman Cannon's in
terpretation of the Black Swan bal
let.
Toward the end of the program,
Josie Marshall and Elizabeth Evans
started an argument over a* lost
bobby-pin.
Sorority Rushing
Doors Wide Open
The Women's Pan-Hellenic Coun
cil of the University of South Caro
lina has recently put out i new list
of rules concerning all girls in con
nection with sorority life.
With the influx of so many of new
co-eds this semester, Pan-Hellenic
has decided to throw the doors wide
open to rushing. Sorority rooms will
be kept open continually, and all
new girls ,are welcome at any time.
They may take their dates there with
no stipulations as to whether there
are one or more girls in the room at
the time.
The Council has also announced
that the rooms will be kept open till
one o'clock on week nights except
Saturday. On Saturday, the one
"big night" of the week, the rooms
will be available for parties lasting
till 2:30 Sunday morning. On Sun
day nights. the rooms will be closed
promptly at ii p. m. according to
the University tradition.
Boys on the campus are encouraged
to attend sorority rush parties and
may accept the fact that they are be
ing used as bait.
These new ~rules have been en
dorsed by President McKissick and
Dean Arney R. Childs.

Players Group Presents
Life On A Navy Campus
The University Players, M. G.
Christopherson, director, have re
ceived an offer from Orson Welles,
noted Hollywood and Broadway
playwriter, actor, and director, te
present their original three-act play,
"Life on a Navy Campus" on
Broadway in New York City this
summer.
Mr. Welles explained in his let
ter, that he had been looking for
new plays and talent and after read
ing "life on a Navy Campus" writter
by Bobby Williams, a University
player, he decided to back it and
the University Players in their pre
sentation to Broadway if they de
sired to accept his offer.
It has not been decided whethei
Mr. W'elles' offer will be accepted
because both the faculty and the
members parents must give their
approval and until a decision has
been reached, this proposal will re
main open.
Mr. Christopherson will continue
as director of the play and Miss
Williams, the authoress, will assist
her in its prodgction as is being
done during the rehearsals now
Those of the players who have prom
inent roles in the play are Misses
Beverly Ninninger, Lucy Anr
Tate, Martha Hodges, Amy Lot
Swarthout, and Melcma Copeland
The masculine roles are portrayed
by Phillip Bernanke, John Herin
and Gifford Campbell.

One of the latest additions to Sims
dormitory is the Mush-room. owned
and operated by Mrs. Rowena
Graham. This room comprises ap
proximately 15o square feet of space
on the first floor of Sims and is di
rectly across the hall from one of
the smaller parlors of the dormitory.
Toward the South the ROOM over
looks the Botanical Gardens, the
Rowena Gardens and the bin con
structed especially for rubbish. To
the right of the ROOM is the check
desk and the room service or Mrs.
Graham's private business effice.
At the grand opening of the Mush
roomn Mrs. Graham announced, as
.l istre <s of Ceremonies, that the
ROOM will be open at all hours as
will be the six new telephone booths.
Girls are asked to place calls of more
than five hundred mile. in distance
after eles en o'clock at night in order
to relies e the crowded telephone con
ditions.

It was 4:oo in the afternoon when
a representative from the regi,trar's
office came to my room to help me
with my schedule. She apologized
for being latc, but explained that she
had already made se'eral calls, help
ing students s ith registration. I
aesked her to bring in the files from
the Registrar's G.1l.Q., so that I
could see what was what on my
tran<cript. When I saw that I had
no cre-lit on thirteen courses, I told
her that I intended to petition for
it. but the representative declared
that she would gladly save me the
trouble and gave me full credit.
Due to the expanded enrollment,
and in order to serve the students
better, the office now co': ers the en
tire lobby floor of Maxcv.
Miss Hlolland has a'lded twenty-five
full-time employees and sixty part
time. In this way, each student will
be able to have a personal adviser
to help with his schedule. Ten clerks
will have the full-time duty of look
ing up the student's records. and tell
them ss hether they made A plus and
